Seattle and south - 2 weeks July 16-30 2018
 

Hi. We are looking at travelling by motorhome on a loop through Washington/Oregon/Northern California. Motorhome with 3 kids, 10,8, and 6. Anyone have any suggested routes or must sees they can pass along?

Where are you coming from with your motor home? After Seattle, start south on US 101. There are many good Oregon State Parks along the coast with campgrounds. Stay on US 101 all the way into the Redwood NP in California.
Leaving California take US199 back into Oregon. You may want to see the Oregon Caves on the way to Grants Pass. Take I-5 south to the Gold Hill exit and take Rt 234 over to Rt. 62 to get to the south entrance of Crater Lake NP.
There are 2 campgrounds in Crater Lake NP. Leaving Crater lake go out the north entrance and go to Bend. There are many campgrounds along the Cascade Lakes Highway.
leaving Bend area, head north on US 97 to Madras and then US 26 to Mt. Hood. Take Rt. 35 down on the east side of Mt. Hood to the town of Hood River. Be sure to see the waterfalls between Hood River and Portland.
Do you have to go back home through Seattle?

Tom - we are coming from Vancouver Canada, so going to pick up a moho in the Seattle area and explore from there. We've toured around north or Seattle a fair bit but haven't ventured south of Seattle. Thanks for your tips! I forgot about the Oregon Caves - saw those myself as a kid, but that was many years ago now!

Grant, another poster also asked about RVing along a similar route, which I answered and described the pros and cons of some of the campgrounds. Some good advice from others as well.

Two weeks isn't a huge amount of time, but you could do a loop something like this - https://goo.gl/maps/SnvsVyEJoxw . I'd head down to Mt. St. Helens (shown as Toutle on the map; Google doesn't allow you to plot roads that are closed by snow when you build the map, but the aim is the Johnston Ridge observatory.) Then I'd follow the north bank of the Columbia River to Cape Disappointment at the (awesome) mouth - historic and beautiful.

Then you'd go all the way down the Oregon coast to Crescent City and Jedediah Smith redwoods, then back inland on US 199 and over to Crater Lake. I'd then head north on US 97 through Bend and on to Mount Hood with a stop at Timberline Lodge, then down the Hood River Valley to Hood River, and finally west through the Columbia Gorge to Portland, then back to Seattle.

Are you experienced RVers? I'd only ask since, depending on the rig, some of the passengers can't see much, and they can be a bit unwieldy on twisty mountain or forest roads. They're also quite expensive. You might do a back-of-the-envelope calculation of the RV vs. a car (maybe SUV or mini-van) plus motels - it might be competitive.

If you do decide that the motor home is too expensive, many of the coastal Oregon State Parks have yurts for rent Getting to Seattle or Portland is fairly easy by train or bus train combo if you didn't want to drive your vehicle into the US.

Be aware July is a VERY busy time of year on routes suggested. If possible do reservations soon..
I am sure you know cannot"camp" in Rest Stops.(some have 6 hr. limit but have never seen that enforced??)..In past Walmart parking lots permitted over nights but I hear this is becoming rare...
Oregon coast is spectacular..Astoria really interesting town ..very historic, Maritime museum, Big KOA ..RV park close more expensive than State Parks...I think it has a indoor pool?(could check that out online) Al.so near Bandon OR

Bend has a great and very unique ...High Desert Museum..my kids loved it...
