SEASIDE RESORT IN MAINE
I am considering five or six days in Maine immediately after Labor Day, and would like a resort setting with an ocean view and a beach to walk on. Looking for relaxation and comfort not a lot of activity. Also, how about Dark Harbor House? Any comments?

Some really nice looking resorts are The Black Point Inn in Prouts Neck, Goose Cove Lodge on Deer Isle, The Colony in Kennebunkport and Sebasco Harbor resort (might be a little too conventional though, doesn't seem very charming).
What about the Beachhouse in Kennebunkport? It's not a resort, but you said you don't want a lot of activity so why pay for it? |
How about Samoset? www.samoset.com - great golf, spa, very pretty...

We really enjoyed "The Inn by the Sea" in Cape Elizabeth (just outside Portland), near the famous "Portland Head Light".

given that you are not looking for "activity," i highly recommend inn by the sea in cape elizabeth or the black point in on prout's neck in scarboro, maine. they are different from each other, but have the similar advantages of being convenient and easy to get to and you can toodle around the numerous portland area sites if you decide to get out. the others mentioned are all just as wonderful, only less convenient.
i love maine. corwina |
Absolutely fabulous is the Ocean Point in East Boothbay. But, there are lots of others.
Highly recommend checking out "Maine, An Explorer's Guide" at your local bookstore... |
bb7, I just came across this thread. If you haven't already made your plans, I highly recommend the Dark Harbor House on Islesboro. It is a perfect retreat - if that's what you're looking for - on a completely unspoiled island. There is not technically an "ocean view" from all rooms (I believe you can see Dark Harbor and the bay beyond from the upstairs rooms), however, the inn is convenientaly located near a wonderful beach on the end of the island. "Activities" consist of long bike rides along quiet roads, exploring the island on foot, relaxing at the inn and enjoying their lovely gardens and verandas. We loved our stay at Dark Harbor House 10 years ago so much that we ended up buying a small cottage on the island! September is my favorite time to visit - warm days, usually very clear, cool nights.

Stuart Woods has a new book DARK HARBOR based in Islesboro- just thought I'd tell you

Another vote for Black Point Inn!

i'm also going to be going to Maine after Labor Day.. after spending a few days in Manhattan, plan on driving. Can anyone give me an idea how far it is from say, Newark to Prouts Neck? Or should we fly to Portland? Don't mean to hijack this thread.. just this one question for now. ... thanks!

I'd say the drive from Newark to Prouts Neck is about 6 hours without too much traffic.

thanks ccrosner.. . perfect!
