Seagrove Beach vs. Destin
We normally stay in or real near Destin on vacation. But w/husband's new job we have to take our vaction the week of July 4th. Destin is too crowded but we love the clear, clean water. Does anyone know if we will be disappointed if we spend our vacation at Seagrove Beach. Wanting the same beach but less crowd.

Seagrove and the beachs of South Walton along 30-A are as nice or nicer than Destin. Main difference you will likely notice is density of accomodations. Much less highrise and much more beach house, small condos East of Destin although the area will still be crowded for the holiday.
I'd try Bud and Alley's and Great Southern Cafe in Seaside, or Onano in Rosemary Beach, or Criolla or Cafe 30-A for dinner. Not sure where you are traveling from, but depending on the day of the week you are driving in, traffic can be terrible 4th of July week. From NO, typically about a 4 1/2-5 hour drive. Has taken 7-8 hrs on the Saturday before 4th of July because rental houses tend to turn over Saturday to Saturday. Not sure what the drive from the East is like. |
Stay on 30A. You will get the same beach but only a fraction of the people and traffic. The only tall condo buildings along 30A are in Seagrove so you might want to find out where you are staying in relation to them as the beach in front of high rise condos will be more crowded.

You will not be disappointed with Seagrove Beach. July 4th could be busy but the beaches there are rarely crowded with the exception of the Sandestin Resort which is high density. Try looking for a beach house on VRBO--lots of choices there. Criolla's and Cafe 30-A are especially good but ACME Oyster House (Baytowne Wharf in SD) and some others are very kid friendly if you are looking for that. Bud & Alley's was our favorite place for years but IMO they have slipped and I would just consider them for lunch. The old part of Destin is just too crowded and has lots of traffic and is a bit tacky.

Agree with the other posters. You will definitely not be disappointed with Seagrove or other 30A beaches. Better beaches than Destin. Less crowded than Destin. Plenty of shops, restaurants, and activites if you don't just want to hang out on the beach. Great houses for rent. You can rent bikes nearby and ride them into Seaside. More relaxed feeling Destin. I loved Destin 10-20 years ago, and while the beaches are still nice, it is no longer my favorite spot. Definitely look at the 30A beaches. You will find a new favorite!
