Not sure if the OP is coming back, but . . . just wanted to say that if they do want to take the train and rent a car in Maine, do that in Portland. Freeport doesn't have any car rentals, and is not what I would call an iconic Maine seaside town. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful off the Main road, and the outlet area is quite tasteful with a good Inn, but it is not typical.
And I'm with Dfrost. Winter is winter. It's not as if those of us who live here don't go out for four months. Hundreds of people travel to Maine, NH, and VT, for winter sports every week and weekend. You use common sense. If it's a snowstorm, wait until it's over. The main roads in New England are usually perfectly clear soon after the snow ends. |

Yeah, everything is better in "New England" isn't it? |
Winter is winter. It's not as if those of us who live here don't go out for four months.
Likewise, summer is summer. People who live in Luxor, Egypt go about their business despite the incredibly high temperatures, but I went there once in August, and I would strongly urge anyone thinking about it to visit any other time of year - it was almost unbearable. |
Yes, but if the OP isn;t used to winter - or didn't realize what a Maine winter is like it could be a shock. Many things that can be done in summer ar just not possible.
|
That's my point - too cold in winter is too cold even if New Englanders are hearty enough to live there and function, and too hot in summer is too hot even if Egyptians are hearty enough to live there and function.

I don't understand the everything better in New England comment. I said main roads are cleared right after storms. That's all. What am I missing causing the snark?
If the OP is still around, I'm sure they got the message that winter is not seafood shack weather loud and clear. As they should know that their idea of a Maine vacation spent outdoors at picnic tables isn't possible. But traveling isn't impossible if they decide to follow through with their plans. And many people here don't just function in winter, they thrive. Believe it or not people love snow. But they have the right clothes and know what to expect and are interested in winter activities. They wouldn't do well in Luxor in summer either. You can drive in a heated car to a heated inn or hotel and luxuriate by the fireplace. Eat lots of seafood and see pretty scenery. You make your own fun. |
I agree, cw. Don't understand the snark either. Since the OP chose winter dates, there must be some idea that there might be snow. If they can't change flights, I think it is best to help them figure out how to enjoy their visit.

I'm with dfrost on this one.

I sure as shootin' don't take scenic tours of the Maine coast though. |
Ah, but other people do.
|
The OP hasn't been back (and probably won't be) . . . but just reading between the lines it seems pretty clear they are not from an area w/ REAL winter weather . . . or they wouldn't have been surprised that things are closed.
So my guess is they expected mild weather and a seaside vacation. But unless/until s/he returns we'll never know . . . |
The vague clues I see are the dates and the spelling of the word "unorganised" (sic). I'm going to posit that the OP is from the southern hemisphere and is planning his/her summer vacation, forgetting that in the northern hemisphere it will be the dead of winter.
Aussies or Kiwis, I'd say. I would be scrambling to reschedule, if it were I. However, I've visited Boston in the winter and had a grand time; I just bundled up and ran into every boutique/coffee house/record and comic book store that was open. The Freedom Trail can be tough to follow when there's snow on the ground, however.... |
Really? I assume from the word "unorganzed" versus "disorganized" that the OP is not a native english speaker - perhaps someone from latin america.
