Scuba diving in Maui
 

Does anyone know of a really good scuba diving place on Maui. Would like to go with a reputable place.

I did a lot of research on this. My hisband and I are both newly certified divers and this will be our firdt "real" dive, unless you count the cold murky quarry we did our certification dive in! After all of this research, we settled on Ed Robinsons Dive shop. They seem to be more concerned with the safety of the diver, and don't appear to be one of the cattle car companies that are so prevalent in Maui. We signed up for three 2-tank dives (one being a night dive). For our first dive we are paying a little extra to get a 4:1 diver to divemaster ratio (the usual is 6:1). Cost wise, the are about the same as most of the other places on the island. When is your trip? Good luck and dive safely.

Dodgersmom, I am also a new diver. We are going in October. How far down did they take you? This will be my first real dive. I am kinda nervous about it. Was it what you expected?

We used the dive operators recommended by the Maui Revealed book over the past two years. Extended Horizons was good in terms of the diving and quality of the staff, however, I felt the boat was too crowded which lessened the overall experience.

Mike Severens was excellent, not crowded, with great divemasters. This was possibly one of the best dive experiences we have had and I would recommend them 100%. The divemasters gave detailed explanations of what we would see underwater, and answered all questions expertly. They go out a little earlier as well to avoid the crowds at popular dive spots.

We also did a trip on the Maui Diamond II which I would totally avoid. It was one of those discounted, last minute deals out of Activity Warehouse. Although the boat was comfortable, the divemasters were not up to snuff, perhaps due to the language barrier, as most of the divemasters on our trip were not native english speakers. There was also a dispute over some of the guests' ruined clothing (they used some kind of bleaching agent for cleaning that got into the guest storage containers) - the owner/manager was rude in resolving the situation, claiming they didn't use bleach on the boat, despite the fact that there was a bottle of it stored in the head (restroom). Overall, that experience left a bad taste in my mouth.

I dove and got certified with Dive Maui, I highly recommend them. They were extremely safety conscious and the boats were not over-crowded.

We actually have not gone yet. We Leave next Saturday the 16th. I will let you know how it went. I am also a little nervous but the guy I spoke to at Ed Robinson told me that they love new divers! Good luck with your search!
