Scottsdale & Rental Car
If I am spending four days at one of the big resorts, is a car really necessary?
I hate having a rental car that we might only use for one day. We don't plan on doing much sightseeing. Perhaps a two tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright House in Scottsdale.
Also, does anyone one know who operates the car rental counter actually located at The Phoenician and if the prices are reasonable?
Thanks in advance.

How will you get to Scottsdale? If you are flying to PHX, it is a $50 cab ride to Scottsdale and taxis aren't that easy to find around the resorts. I felt trapped there, especially when I learned I could have had a rental car from for 3 days for about the same cost as two long taxi rides.

You really do need it car, but it comes at a great expense in Phoenix...the local taxes add 40% to the bill! Make sure the quotes you get include these taxes so you'll know exactly how much you'll be spending.

Rent a car and make the reservation on the internet. It will be a lot cheaper than renting from the Phoenician. Perhaps if you are worried about the logistics in returning the car early, rent from Enterprise since "they pick you up."

It depends on what kind of stay you are planning. We stayed at the Phoenician most of the time and enjoyed the pool, golf courses, spa, and also hiked up Camelback Mountain...all of which made a car unneccesary for us. I believe a shuttle from the Phoenician picked us up at the airport (but can't recall what we paid, if at all). When we would go out for dinners, we took a cab into Old Towne Scottsdale area and the restaurants always had a cab waiting for us when we left as long as we told them in advance.
Taliesen is a bit of a ways away from the Phoenician though so it you should at least get a car for one day.
The other posters are right- Scottsdale/PHX is very spread out. If you think you will get "cabin fever" staying just at the resort, then rent a car. We felt fine without one.
