We live in the Phoenix area and August/September can be very warm and humid. It is nearing the end of our "monsoon" season and storms often pop up in the late afternoon and evening. It can be about 105 degrees with humidity. If you are planning to see museums, etc. the buildings will be air conditioned. There are some great side trips out of Phoenix that should be a bit cooler, Sedona, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff (all north of here). All hotels have central air conditioning as do most car rentals. Try to stay in a hotel with a pool!

It is very hot and humid at that time of year. Outdoor activities are fine before 10 AM and after about 5-6 PM. By the pool and indoor activities are no problem.
However, years ago I met a girl at a bakery near Cambridge, England. I was wearing an Arizona tee shirt and she asked if I was from AZ. I said yes and she told me she had spent her last vacation the previous August in Phoenix and really enjoyed the heat.
