Scottsdale in August
 

Hi, everyone,
Thinking of going to the Four Seasons at Troon North in August, but a bit afraid of the temperature (our idea is just to chill by the pool). Any suggestions from locals or people who visited Scottsdale at that time of the year as to whether we should leave it for a bit later in the year?

The average high in August ranges from 102 °F to 104°F. Only you can decide if that would be pleasant or unpleasant. Do you plan to sit in the sun at the pool, or are you looking for shade. Personally I would have no problem going in August if I could have shade within view of the pool, but sun and those temps, no thanks.

The term "average temps" is misleading. Keep in mind that if the average is 104, that means it was hotter during the day. August daytime temps are more likely to be in the 110 and up range, with more humidity than we normally have. Uncomfortable does not even begin to describe it. With that said, so far we have been having great weather in the phx/scottsdale area - way below normal. But I dont know if I would take the chance that it will continue to be below normal in August.

I would come at some other time of year.

Love the Four Seasons in Scottsdale and have been in August and we love the heat by the pool..of course, we are not out there all day but we get a cabana and have lunch served and its quite lovely..
There are misters poolside that diminish the heat to some degree but I wouldn't suggest hanging out there all day..
Great restaurants in Scottsdale and Cave Creek area.

The average HIGH in Scottsdale is 102-104 °F in August, that is not the average daily temperature.

"A bit later in the year" would definitely provide better weather (milder temps and lower humidity). But for what you are looking for ("our idea is just to chill by the pool") August will work fine, and hotel rates will be very low compared to high season.

In August we often get violent afternoon storms, sometimes with blowing dust, but mornings are typically fine for laying by the pool. The extreme high temperatures that sometimes hit the area (118 - 122 F) typically come earlier in the summer prior to the monsoon moisture.

I live in Cave Creek, AZ. If the high in August were 102-104, I would be thrilled. Bill_H, I think August is one of our worst months. I would definitely not recommend that someone come here then unless they want to go out to the pool at 8am for a few hours and then find something indoors to do for the rest of the day. And certainly, if their car is not parked under covered parking, they are in for a real treat when they get in the car to go somewhere later in the day.

There is a reason you can get low hotel rates here in the summer.

The average high in Cave Creek is even lower than Scottsdale.

orangetravelcat, I agree with you that "August is one of our worst months" (actually I would say that August IS our worst month, because of the humidity), and the 102-104 F highs seem a bit low to me too. But for hanging around the pool a couple of hours and paying probably 25% of high season rates at a first class resort it would still work.

As for the temps, I checked www.weather.com and they agree with sf7307's source, with average highs in Scottsdale of 103 F in August. Phoenix is a couple degrees warmer. I spent a week in Scottsdale one August and thought it was brutal. I know it's a drier heat than we're used to (we live on the Gulf Coast), but so's the inside of our oven! The temps were consistently over 110F so maybe we just ran into a "heat" wave. But it definitely was not pleasant. And FWIW, our friends who live in Scottsdale take their vacation in August.

Having said that, I agree that you'll just have to decide what's acceptable to you.

There is a reason one can get such huge hotel bargains in summer and especially in August.

You can't chill by the pool all day - you can lay by the pool for a couple of hours in the AM but then you'll be hunkered down somewhere inside w/ full force a/c.

My husband grew up in Arizona. He says the trick to living in the heat is to stay up all night and sleep during the day.

Thank you all!!! We decided to leave this trip for later in the year, and take a driving vacation around California in August, instead.

AZ is having record lows for this summer..
Probably safe bet to drive around California, even though we are having a start of a cold summer.
Some killer deals and we are going to a 5* resort in Scottsdale in July for $80 a night..probably will be $60 in August! ;)

One day while bicycling in England, I stopped in a bakery outside Cambridge. I as wearing my 'Arizona Bicycle Club' jersey. The girl behind the counter noticed it and remarked that she had been in Phoenix the previous August and loved it! If all you plan on doing is relaxing by the pool, then there is nothing wrong with AUgust.

the monsoon season is usually in August and man those electrical and rain storms are wicked..you have to be very careful..especially in the Cave Creek area..one time, we were staying in the Boulders resort for a week and saw the big black dust cloud moving toward us..so we jumped in the car, close to the main road and golf course and the torrential rain came through those washes and stranded motorist and thank goodness I was on the high point of the road..they had search and rescue teams and this all happened in a matter of minutes..must of rained about a 6 inches in 5 minutes.
next time we are staying put on the patio and watching it from the casita..without the drama.

I love the desert in the summer..
