Scottsdale - Fun Roads

On our "living large" weekend in Scottsdale we are renting a porsche. Any recommendations for fun, twisty roads to drive? Little traffic is important and nice scenery a benefit.

probably too rough since it is not paved but the Apache Trail would be a challenge.

You also might go out US 60 up the Salt River Canyon

You're talking my language! ...Except that I did the Apache Trail in a regular ol' Sebring.

I strongly recommend that you start the Apache Trail from the east, heading west. Begin at the Roosevelt Dam area - I believe the city is actually called Roosevelt. You'll miss a lot of traffic out this way.

You will also begin on the unpaved portion, heading toward Tortilla Flat, where it becomes a paved road. Most people will begin west and head east, then stopping at the unpaved portion at Tortilla Flat after they begin at Apache Junction (they miss the best part - the second half!).

The convertable is the ONLY way to see the portion of the trail I am describing as you will be deep, deep, and deeper in canyons. Look up! Yup, there are twists and turns - you'll have a blast! Traffic will be very light too. There is a nice stopping point if you look way below the trail - along the river just west of the dam. A couple of picnic tables are down there as well - would be a great place for a lunch, although it would be at the beginning of your 1 1/2 to 2-hour tour.

Enjoy the ride and the spectacular views with that roof down. :-)

I thought I read somewhere the Apache Trail is all paved now? Where can I get a map with directions, etc. Thanks

I'm sure I just read in the paper that The Apache Trail is now paved, either way, it is a must!!! Also, as bigtyke says, Salt River Canyon is a workout....you could also do Schnebly Hill in Sedona, it's a YIKES!!!!!!! Neither of the last two can be driven fast, but are twisty....scenery?, yes!!!

i think you would trash a posche on schnebly hill...don't do it!

desertduds Oct 12th, 2005 03:46 PM

The only way you'd trash your Porsche is to overside and then it would be a big crash!

Below is a link to an article about Schnebley Hill Road. The questioner can better make up his/her own mind.

Closer to Scottsdale, a tamer ride would be going out to cave creek road and then the bartlett lake road.

Ha! The joke's on us (me?) since the inquiry was posted in April, i doubt anyone really cares whether the porsche made it up ol' Schnebley or not....
