I believe that many California schools are on a year-round basis now, as the newer schools have been built with air conditioning.

Not all schools in California are on a year round basis.

In the Bay Area school starts around the beginning of September. But I wouldn't count on it being totally kid free. There are many that travel with toddlers at this time of the year #-o

Our school district in N. San Diego goes back August 25. I believe San Diego Unified goes back the day after Labor Day.

Actually - many tourist attractions have a lot more kids after schools has reopened.

Most California Schools (other than the year-round ones) return to class the end of August or just after Labor Day. But during Sept is when a LOT of schools schedule field trips to museums, parks, etc.

A couple of kids w/ their parents on vacation is a lot easier to handle than 35 kids w/ one teacher and two parents or aides.

We often travel in Sept as it coincides with our anniversary. Students are back in school and most places are very quiet. It's amazing how relaxing places are after the busy summer. It's also a little sad when you go places that are packing up after the summer. We watch owners pull out boats and other summer equipment and shut down for the season.

We don't visit museums or parks that appeal to early learners though, so I've never run into a group of field trippers. Though there are lots of year round schools in CA there are many more on the traditional school year. These schools usually return during the last week of August or the day or two after Labor Day.

In my part of the world in south Texas it's August 18.

Mote,

You're safe with that date, no little munchkins running around to disturb you!

Each school district has a different starting date. In my local (California) area schools either start the last week of August or the first week of September right after Labor Day.

There are still college kids who will still be on vacation. The year round schools generally have 3 weeks off four times a year. So...some of those kids might not be in school, but not enough to worry about.

Have a great vacation -- September and October weather is usually beautiful in California, depending upon where you're headed can even be quite HOT still in mid-September!

I live in California and my kids start school September 4. By September 12, most attractions should be largely free of school aged kids on weekdays EXCEPT for the school tour groups who love to descend on attractions at 10 am. If your trip includes museums or zoos, you won't be able to avoid the school groups in the mornings. By early afternoon, though, such groups are usually gone.
