OWJ, sorry you had your mishpuche visiting ;)

I was in Zurich, and tried to explain in English that I want carbonated water. "Wasser mitt gas?" she asked. I was surprised how fast I've learned German :) (it's the same in Yiddish)

Your keppie must be splitting after taking your MOther in laws mishugass.. what a mishugenah you are for schlepping her around with you. You should have left her tuchas home and you could have enjoyed your time alone. Now Gay schluffin , gay gizunteriet.

I've seen "schlep" as a crossword puzzle answer. Great idea, FainaAgain -- my next tote bag from Lands' End might be monogrammed with "SCHLEP."

robbiegirl Aug 3rd, 2005 12:56 PM

It should say SCHLEPPER is in the bag is a schlepper..actually that can be used as a term for a person who doesnt do anything in life..drags along, doesnt get anywhere..

Look at that guy, he is a real schlepper. He hasnt had a job in years.

My old PA license plate for the overloaded van (with alte sachen und alte schmattes) said "Schlep" -- it was, it was. Yiddish is a wonderfully expressive language, sadly disappearing. Check Leo Rosten's Joys of Yiddish for generally accepted spellings and definitions.

Now, one only has to master the guttural "ch" sound as is "Pesach" to come off like a proper mensch.

capecodshanty Aug 18th, 2005 08:11 AM

Get the great paperback book (if it's still in print, entitled Yiddish for Schiksas!! (approx. spelling, since I'm a shicksa).

Rachel Aug 18th, 2005 08:19 AM

this post made me think about the time my then 5 year old (now just turning 19) asked me to make shicksa-bobs for dinner. They are remarkably similar to shish-ka-bobs!

FainaAgain Aug 18th, 2005 08:38 AM

LOL Rachel!!

I was at a movie with a non-Jewish pal and at one point he whispered in my ear about the male and female stars, "I hear he's schlepping her." After I finished snorting Pepsi through my nose, I explained that he should have said, "I hear he's schtupping her." Although I have to admit that picturing him schlepping her was much funnier!

hdm Aug 18th, 2005 09:30 AM

Also, there's a yiddish phrase "schepping nachas" which means to get joy or pride from something. For example, you would schep nachas if your kid graduated summa cum laude. But I have a friend whose version I prefer -- she always tells me she's "schlepping nachos".

Citylghts Aug 18th, 2005 10:00 AM

Wouldn't shiksa-bobs be available only from a non-kosher butcher?

Yawn_boring Aug 18th, 2005 10:01 AM

would you meshuganas quit all the kibitzing!

ronkala Aug 18th, 2005 11:31 AM

thankyou for bringing this Goyum back to my early days working at Korvettes (E.J) in the mid fifties where I learned many Yiddish words, phrases, and was given the name Ronkala.

capecodshanty Aug 18th, 2005 11:34 AM

Ronkala- was the Korvette's in Scotch Plains, N.J.- or Trumbull Ct.??
