Scenic Drive - Rockland to Moosehead Lake?

I'm driving from the Rockland area up to Greenville, Moosehead Lake, in September.

Does anyone know a scenic route? I don't care if it takes longer - time is not an issue. Thx.

17 out of Rockland for about 20 miles to Hope, then 105 to Searsmont where you'll veer right onto 131 north through Morrill to Evans Corner , then up 7 through Brooks and Newport...take 23 in Dexter to Guilford, then 6 to Greenville.

(Wait a minute did you say Greenville? Come to think of it, you cahn't get theyah from heeyah!) :)

Are you going to spend a night or two in the area? Because Greenville is just the southern tip of the lake, no great vistas unless you venture out from town.

Thanks, DDD.

Yes, I'm spending 3 nights in the area and plan to do a lot of exploring -- and I hope I get to see a moose!

BTW, any recos for things of interest?

I know there are many expensive guided tours - which I don't intend to take - but I'd like to see the waterfalls and do some relatively easy hiking, as well as scenic drives.

Anything else I should not miss? TIA.

The past two years I have seen moose on the road from Greenville to Kokadjo

I have seen a bear along a main road in the more civilized parts of this area.

Sounds very cool, bigtyke and Ackislander. I'd be thrilled to see some wildlife.

As long as 4 or more people sign up that day, there's a 2 hour "Moose Cruise" from the Birches Resort, $35 for morning cruise and $45 afternoons. A pontoon boat takes you across the beautiful lake to a moose sanctuary near the river.
I think the Birches is about 25 min drive from Greenville.

There's also a shuttle-boat to Mt Kineo but I think it only runs in summer. Note that boating on the lake can be pretty rough if you tend towards seasickness at all.

If you google Scenic Drives Moosehead you'll find a list of scenic excursions listed by The Lodge at Moosehead.

Thanks very much, Debbie. My hotel offers a "Moose Cruise" for $175 for one or two people.

The one at Birches Resort is much more reasonable. I'll definitely look into that.
