Scary Road in Colorado?
Does anyone know if the road from Glenwood Springs and Aspen (highway 82) in Colorado is scary? Are there guard rails?
|
Not scary. It runs through a wide valley. You can see the road on maps.google.com if you click and drag the little yellow man (lower right corner) to a point on the road.

thank you!

It is damn near flat. Just runs up the valley along a river. The back road via Independence Pass into Aspen from Leadville is another issue and I would recommend that you do not even consider that possibility. The drive through Glenwood Canyon on I-70 just prior to Glenwood Springs is a scenic drive and you are well protected by guard rails and other barriers.
And just to head off the question, the road between Glenwood Springs and Vail along I-70 is a standard, four lane, divided interstate road. Please, Colorado is not a third world country. All of our roads are constructed and maintained in an appropriate manner and there are guard rails are in places when required. Now, some of the country roads might be an exception BUT you are not going to be on mostly gravel, unpaved country roads anywhere. We like tourists and we want your money. Having you slide off the side of a road does not benefit anyone in anyway. We are very interested in preventing that from happening. Relax you will not die in Colorado. PS --- what is allowing you to believe that we don't have guard rails on our roads?????? |

A mudslide-- now, that's scary! We are headed through Glenwood Canyon this week. Hoping the slides are over. |
That was west of Glenwood Springs and not in Glenwood Canyon - the areas that the OP was asking about. No reported slides in the canyon. Mud slides and rock slides are common in the mountains areas but like earthquakes in CA, unpredictable and rarely causes any deaths. Is this really needed for the OP's peace of mind? And there can be lighting strikes.

“Is this really needed for the OP's peace of mind?” As much as anything you’ve posted, fmpden. Like: “PS --- what is allowing you to believe that we don't have guard rails on our roads??????” Because that’s so helpful. |
