Scarlett

Hi! Could you please email me? I have questions about Portland. Thank you!
Ani

Not meant to snub Scarlett, but is there any reason that no one else might benefit from these Portland questions being posted for all?

Fodorite018 Feb 3rd, 2008 03:47 PM

Ani--Like Patrick, I am not snubbing Scarlett at all. But there are several of us here on the board that live here, so if you need help with something just ask:) Myself, beachbum, merseyheart...just to name a few.

Thanks-its actually a relocation question, and pretty vague at that. Perhaps I'll post over on the lounge as its a more appropriate forum for relo. Thank you!

Since Scarlett is off romping around in South America these days, you might let those of us left up here in the PNW help you out?
:-)

Okee dok-well since the thread is started anyway....
DH and I possibly relocating to the Portland area. We have 2 children aged 4 and 1.5. Looking for neighborhoods with older (ie early 1900's) homes in the 400k price range. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Fodorite018 Feb 4th, 2008 10:50 AM

There are many neighborhoods right in Portland that fit that bill. A few to start looking at would be Mt. Tabor, East Moreland and Laurelhurst. But like I said, there are quite a few. Would DH be working in downtown Portland or somewhere else?

Ani Feb 4th, 2008 11:47 AM

Thanks mms...DH would most likely be working in Downtown Portland.
Could you give me the skinny on Milwaukie?

Scarlett Feb 4th, 2008 02:12 PM

Ani, I cannot find your email addy.
Mine is the same..do you still have it? scarletto1
at hotmail..

If you will allow me to plug my website, it has literally thousands of pictures of Portland, including many "street" photos. And it has a separate "neighborhoods guide" with maps, pictures, descriptions, etc. Google for "portland bridges" and my site is the first result.

Fodorite018 Feb 4th, 2008 03:19 PM

Ani--Personally, I would not opt for Milwaukie. That is based on having 2 friends that grew up there. One family is still there, but the other did not like what it has become and so moved to Lake Oswego. The biggest thing, IMO, is to find schools that you like, then look in those areas.

Ani,

You might give this link a check. There is an area map and links to the various neighborhoods in Portland, OR with useful info.

Mms, If you know of a house in Laurelhurst in the $400's, I wanna buy it!!!! ;-) Sellwood would be a good place to look, too, Ani. Or St. John's? How early in the 1900's?

To me, Milwaukie mostly invokes images of strip malls, chain and fast food restaurants, and light-industrial parks..... No real "downtown". And I don't think much sense of community. But that's not to say you won't find decent neighborhoods there.

Fodorite018 Feb 4th, 2008 03:33 PM

Andrew--I checked out your website. You might want to update your LO page though as there are 2 public high schools, not just one.

Fodorite018 Feb 4th, 2008 03:35 PM

beachbum--LOL...true! Course maybe there is a good fixer upper there for that price;)

Ani Feb 4th, 2008 05:18 PM

Awesome info guys.....super appreciated. And the description of Milwaukie is exactly what we DONT want!

Ani Feb 4th, 2008 05:21 PM

Also-I spent several years as a child in Clackamas. I remember loving it but I'm wondering if anyone could tell me more about what its like now?

lcuy Feb 4th, 2008 05:25 PM

The Clinton area might fit your needs. Very up and coming, good schools, and lots of cool places to eat. Still plenty of $400K homes. Well, not plenty, but a few!
