Savannah tours?
 

My wife and I and our 5 and 6 year old boys are spending a few days in Savannah this June and have time for 2 or 3 tours. Which boat, bus, carriage or walking tours would someone recommend? They all look good in the brochures but would like some first hand information. Any other recommendations would also be welcome. Thank you.<BR><BR><BR><BR><BR><BR>

We just got back from a 3-day trip to Savannah over MLK weekend . . . we had a marvelous time!<BR><BR>We only took the trolley-type tour, there are 3 different tour companies, I think. and the clerk at the big tourist center (on MLK) said that by law, they were all exactly the same . . . same price, same route . . . you can get brochures with $2/pp discounts at the center.<BR><BR>We went with the Old Town Trolley tour (the orange trolley) and it was hop on/hop off and we enjoyed it. I think we paid $20/pp. We bought our ticket after 2:00 p. and it was good for that day and the next and also included admission to one of the historic, restored homes (we chose the Davenport House).<BR><BR>Savannah was GREAT!<BR>Sandy

Stay away from the bus Ghost Tour. Full of bad jokes and way over priced.

We went to the tourist office and got a brochure that described a driving tour.<BR>We spent a couple of hours doing it ourselves. There are several tours you can take, but other than the ghost tour, I have not heard much pro or con about any of them.<BR>The old fort out toward Tybee Island is something of a history lesson.<BR>

We took a carriage tour at night and loved it. The city looks very magical at night and you get a different perspective than on the day tours even though they pretty much cover the same route.<BR><BR>We also took a day tour on one of the busses that you hop on/off. Can't remember the tour company, but I think they're all pretty much the same.<BR><BR>If your boys like boats, the river tours are fun. We took a dolphin tour (they're available all along the riverfront), which was pretty fun. Be sure to bring sunscreen, hats and water if you do this - it got a little warm. <BR><BR>Have a great time - we loved Savannah.

Thanks for the info. Any places a must to see? Anything overrated? How about eating places? I'd enjoy hearing from non-professional tourists about places the experts say are good (or bad) Thank you!

I enjoyed walking along Founder's Walk and just strolling the squares. There are several homes that are museums that you can visit. Most of the trolley tours include admission to one house. I think I went to the Low house (founder of the Girl Scouts).<BR><BR>Be sure to eat at the Pink House -- the crispy snapper (I think it's snapper) with apricot sauce is delicious!

I agree on the Pink HOuse - our meal was so good that I asked for recipes (and they actually mailed them to my house as promised!). After our meal, we walked around the area. There was some kind of park or courtyard nearby and we saw a group of people congregating at one side. Turns out they were waiting for a walking ghost tour to begin, so we joined them for the tour and loved it! If your boys scare easily, it may not be a good idea. But if not, it was a lot of fun.

My wife and I thought the Pink House was to stuffy and full of snob's. Mrs Wilkes was alot of fun. Great food.

Changing the subject but I've read horrible reports on the Days Inn downtown. I was hoping it was ok because it's close to many things downtown and not prohibitively (to me ) expensive. What is wrong with this hotel?

I never went inside. But you could glance into some of the rooms as you walk by. It just did'nt look to clean, and it gave me the creeps every time I saw it. The Travelodge just down the street looked realy nice.

We were just in Sav Jan 19-21 and stayed at the Best Western, 412 W. Bay St, ph 912-233-1011 . . . it looked awful from the outside but they are redoing the rooms and ours was very nice . . . 2 double beds, tv, coffee maker, hairdryer, iron/board, sink/vanity outside of the bathroom. We had room 303 non-smoking and everything was new (drapes, spreads, towels). We paid $78 (including taxes) and this included breakfast.<BR><BR>The location was very convenient to everything and we will definitely stay there again.<BR><BR>Sandy
