Savannah Riverwalk Marriott
Is this place within walking distance to major attractions and historical sites? Sounds like a good location in print, but one man's walk is another man's marathon.
Anyone stayed here recently? |
I didn't stay there but did attend a dinner at the Marriott Savannah. It did seem to be south of things but not a taxi ride away.
Maybe just a long walk? OO used to live there and she could probably give you a better assessment but I like the location of the Holiday Inn, Hyatt, and Westin better than that of the Marriott. The Hilton is also in a good location. |
Have not stayed there, but know where it is. It is not quite as centrally located as some of the other "Historic District" hotels. That said, while one can walk around much of the historic district, it is really a little much to do exclusively on foot. This hotel is at one end/side of the historic district rather than in the middle of it.
It is easy walking distance to River Street, which is a street running just feet from the River on which many restaurants and shops are located. Bay Street is the next street up/in from the River - and it really is up as it is in some places about one story above River level - accessed by series of steep stairs and in some cases hills. Bay Street forms the river side boundary of historic district. (Hope this is not too confusing, but if you got a map of the Historic District of Savannah this would make more sense.) |
We did not stay there either when we were there in July but you are definitely within walking distance to the major attractions and historical sites. You will just have to walk a little bit further than if you were smack in the middle of the historic district.

I think of the Marriott as anchoring the eastern end of the historic district. It really isn't much of a walk at all, although it is just a bit further from the midst of everything--not enough to worry about however, if that's the hotel you want. Now, :) that said, although I'm not a marathoner, I am a runner so distances don't phase me.
Do ask for a river view room--the ships that come up to the port are amazing. We lived on the 7th floor of the Hyatt, which was more like the 10th floor as there were 3 levels of garage starting at the River St level and going up with the hotel sitting on top of that, and the bridges of many of the ships passed our suite at eye level. It is worth the extra money IMHO. |
