Savannah Restaurants
 

Does anyone have any wonderful local places they like to eat at? How about stop-at-the-end-of-the-afternoon for a drink place?

We enjoyed several places while we were in SAV in June 2003. You can dig up my trip report if you'd like...
Some of the places I enjoyed the most were:
--Vinnie Van Go-gos in City Market...it's a New York style pizza place with really good pizza...the atmosphere is loud and cramped unless you sit outside.

--No trip to Savannah is complete without a stop at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. Make sure you get there early. We were the 3rd in line at 10 for 1st seating at 11. VERY nice people (Mrs. Wilkes kids and grankids) run the palce and make sure you wear expandable pants.

--Not IN Savannah, but I liked the Crab Shack on the way to Tybee. You can tell it's a former local place that has sold out to the tourists...but still very good seafood.

--We ate at a couple places down on River St that were touristy, but good...don't remember the names but I'm sure they're in the trip report when you do the search....there was one place we had a bad experince for brunch/lunch...that's there too.

Some places that we didn't get to go, but I have had freinds tell me they were great are The Lady and Sons as well as the Olde Pink House

Was just going to mention the Pink House when I saw it at the end of the prior reply. Formal and a little pricey, but the food and atmoshpere are great.

teener: The funky Crab Shack is very entertaining with a hip staff and shabby chic sea side decor. But, the food is atrocious, very large sevings of overcooked, flavorless seafood.
If you want something a little upsacale, try Elizebeth's; beautiful old home made into a restaurant, great service and ambience, and wonderful food. Have a great trip.

Sunday NY Times Travel section had an article about Savannah last Sunday - see if you can dig it up.

Mrs. Wilkes died about a year ago and the place was closed - do not know if it has reopened.

It's still open. Get there by 10:30!

The Lady and Sons is delicious! Be sure to call ahead for reservations or you will have to wait forever to get in. Try the buffet so you can sample a little bit of everything.

I second the Lady and sons... Brilliant southern cooking... an experience.

Elizabeth's on 37th is a wonderful restaurant. We were so impressed that we bought the cookbook. I would go to Savannah again just to eat there.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I got the NY Times article and printed it out. We love going to new cities just to eat!

Hi. We just returned from Savannah and Charleston two days ago. We had three fabulous meals: Bistro Savannah near the city market, Garibaldi's near the market, Lady and Sons. We loved the food at all three. Bistro Savannah was seriously fabulous!

We vacationed in Savannah last Sept, and found some great places in the historic area (we are foodies). Try Fusion for Asian food and trendy atmosphere with fun Monkey Bar for drinks. Sapphire Grill had the best chef, innovative cuisine and NY inner-city style decor with a very small bar area filled with hip people. Il Pasticcio had very good Italian food and an unremarkable but nice space. Elizabeth on 37th is visiting the old elegant, faded South. Soho South Cafe for sandwiches and soup in a funky atmosphere.

Glad to hear it's still open....I still think about that meal now and again, it was such a wonderful lunch. Sad to hear Mrs. Wilkes died, as I did get to meet her when I was there.

Ye Olde Pink House was fabulous!!! Everything from the salad to the desert, nothing was wrong. I highly recommend it!!!
