Savannah or Hilton Head?
Hello:
My husband and I are wondering if we should stay in HH, Savannah or somewhere else nearby for 4 days in late April? We like historical stuff, dining, nature, nightlife. Where would our time be best spent? Oh, and is it warm enough to swim that time of year? |
Weather is a crapshoot. It will probably be warm enough to swim in a pool but the ocean may be chilly. On the other hand, it could be 90 degrees. March and April are weird months but on average, you should be able to swim. Savannah is a historical town while Hilton Head is a golf/beach destination resort. |
If you like urban life stay in Savannah; if you like the beach & ocean stay in HHI. If you stay in HHI, Savannah is an easy and very enjoyable day trip. If you stay in Savannah, HHI is hard to navigate with gated sections and very limited beach access.I would strongly recommend HHI.

Agree with cheap. Unless you are staying in one of the plantations on HHI, trying to get to the beach is one big PIA. Everything, and I mean everything on HHI is a gated community. Tybee Island is much more visitor friendly and closer to Savannah. |
I agree. I applaud HHI for their "no large signage" and trying to keep the commercialization down, but that has only applied to commercial places. The island is just a series of gated communities/hotels; if you aren't staying at one of those, you are hosed. The traffic on 278 (main drag through the island) is also getting crazy. Unless you want to play golf and tennis the whole trip (or bike around...they do have quite a few bike trails), you may want to look elsewhere. Also, I have not been overly impressed with the restaurants on HHI. Also, have you looked at Charleston? Or even just up the coast at Beaufort?
