Charleston without a doubt. We have just come back from a trip to both and I certainly didn't find any charm and hospitality in Savannah.

With good reason.
3phish, are you still around? How about telling us some of those secret places. I'm going to be in Savannah within the next two weeks.

@3phish: "Isle Hope is probably one of the most beautiful marinas in the country with old historic homes on Bluff drive. Savannah has more to offer than river street and the downtown area. The golf is better and the ladies are gorgeous. Go boating to Wassaw and observe the beauty in the marshes"

The problem with a response like this is it is more for those who live in Savannah than those who visit. I don't go to any city for the marina - no matter how beautiful. I don't go to play golf - you can do that anywhere. I don't go to look at gorgeous ladies. How would a visitor go "boating" without joining some cheesy tourist trip? So while I'm sure its a wonderful place to live, I agree that Charleston is the better place to visit.

I'm bookmarking because we loved Charleston, but have never been to Savannah. The plantation tours around Charleston were really interesting to me. Loved the architecture and food as well.

If anyone still cares about this thread:

Have been to both, once to Charleston, 6 times to Savannah. Loved them both. While Charleston is a bustling city and probably has more to do and see, there is something special about Savannah that you can't describe. It has kind of a laid back mystical appeal. There is just a feeling I get when you are there that I do not get anywhere else. It is almost like you have stepped back in time. While in Charleston we were always on the go seeing this place and that place and eating great food. When in Savannah, the best thing you can do is park yourself in one of the squares and just watch. You can almost feel the history that happened there.

Just my humble opinion!

gmoney--I agree. Savannah can be almost impossibly romantic, in the parks or squares uptown with the live oaks and the moon. I never get that feeling in Charleston.

I just used this thread as a reference as a way to decide where to go for a quick getaway. Remember, often people will search for something and are glad to find information.

OK, so it is an old thread, Gretchen and what of it? IMO it is still quite relevant even though being in Charleston during the occasional hurricane is NOT what I would consider attractive.

Fun read! Blast from the past. Someone I know just got engaged at the Isle of Hope marina.

Savannah. Hands down.

Both are wonderful cities, you can't go wrong. I think Charleston and surrounds has a bit more to do, so I would say 2-3 days there. And 2 days in Savannah. Savannah feels like you are stepping back in time. The drive between them is also lovely. Have so much fun!

Welcome to Fodors Larissa8287. If you are planning a trip it is usually better to start a thread of your own with your specific questions, rather than tagging on to old moldy threads - especially a six year old one.

But even in Charleston things change over 5 years--new restaurants, etc.
