We did a tour of historic homes in Charleston - very cool to see people living in them now, so a mix of modern and traditional touches. The gardens were amazing. Haven't been to Savannah yet but would love to. Magnolia's was a nice spot for dinner.

Charleston is the first place I've ever heard the term "War of Northern Aggression" - took me a second to realize they met the Civil War!

Well, they are both better than either Charleston or Savannah, but you get my point: they are different and both are wonderful.

As for frugaltraveler's comment that "Being able to walk past the beautiful houses, thru the squares, and meander back was our highlight", I'm not sure if she's intending to distinguish that from Charleston, but all we did in Charleston was walk, walk, walk, all the way down the Battery, up Meeting Street, to the pier where the boat leaves for Ft. Sumter, up and down King Street. I live in a big city, so Charleston didn't seem big or congested to me at all.

A military family, my wife and I have lived in several places around the U.S., to include Alaska, and have absolutely fallen in love with Savannah. The city is unique in it's character and haunting atmosphere. The contrast between Southern gentility and flip-flop casual is striking. A bird's veiw of the city says alot about what you can expect. A huge canopy of live oaks blanket and conceal the beautiful squares lined by 19th century homes dressed in ornate architecture. Where else can you walk down the street with your 60 proof 'Call-A-Cab' slushie, jump in a hearse with your friends and take a tour of one of America's most historic and eclectic cities?

But I like them both. It seems I like the one I'm in at the time better than the other one.

I used to be a little "bothered" by the fact that so much of Savannah is broken up -- some historic houses oozing character and then some much more modern stuff thrown between them, while Charleston's Historic District always seemed nearly ALL Historic and certainly more compact. I somehow think Charleston has kept more architerctual integrity within their entire Historic area, while Savannah, not so much.

I lived in New Orleans for 15+ yrs. where they have drive through daiquiri stands, but absolutly fell in love with the French Quarter of Charleston. Partied pretty hard there. Guess I'll have to plan a trip to Savanah now.
