Savannah or Charleston

We have two days to spend in May between destinations (Hilton Head & The Smokies) and would like to stay in a Bed and Breakfast in either Savannah or Charleston. Suggestions appreciated.

I have never been to Charleston, but many times to Savannah. Savannah is an hour's drive to Hilton Head. I always stay with my in-laws who live there, so I can't tell you much about any particular B&B's. My wedding reception was at the Hyatt on River Street- a beautiful hotel and River St. is a lot of fun. Although a bit touristy, there are still many worthwhile shops and restaurants. You will have to have freshly made pralines at River St. Sweets. There is a great candle store, where candlemaking is demonstrated on the premises (all of my friends who attended the reception have one now!) I don't know of any B&B's on River St., but there are many in the charming neighborhoods surrounding the squares and plazas. There is some great food as well- of course great seafood, especially shrimp. There is nationally renowned Elizabeth's on 37th St- expensive, but one of the best meals I have had anywhere- reserve well in advance for a weekend night. You can also try a fabulous southern brunch at Mrs. Wilkes- as long as you don't count the calories! I hope this helps.

Charleston is a must. Although it's not technically
a B&B we stayed at the Meeting Place Inn located
across from the Market. It's very nice with a lovely
piazza and outdoor hot tub. They serve a breakfast
in the lobby of fruit, yogurt, bagels and muffins so
you can grab a quick bite before heading out. In the
afternoon they have wine & cheese and their's always
complimentary lemonade, coffee, etc. At night they
have a turn down service and leave a chocolate on
the pillow. If you only have one day I suggest you
go and tour the U.S.S. Yorktown (the aircraft carrier). Allow 4 hours. Also the walk along the Battery is spectacular. Take a carriage ride to
check out the history. You could do the carriage,
Yorktown and walk in one day. There are many plantations if that's you're style. Middleton has
the nicest grounds, Magnolia the best swamp. I also
suggest any of the historical home tours. All the
homes were impressive. Don't leave without trying
out the juggling board. If you don't know what that
is you can try one at Edmondston-Alston House (21
east Battery) or at Middleton Place.

Sorry that's joggling board not juggling. Write
down my E-mail as I'd love to hear where you went
and what you saw. Charleston ties for favourite
place in the world which is Venice, Italy.
