Savannah - inexpensive hotel
 

Can anyone give me the name of an inexpensive hotel in the historic area of Savannah?

Probably not - most are higher priced hotels. You could do Priceline, since the Historic District is so compact and well-defined that any hotel would be OK.

If you want to save money and don't mind driving to Historic District, paying for parking, then look at hotels in Midtown area. This is not in the middle of any town but on a 2 lane in each direction road with lots of chain stores, hotels, restaurants. Not historic or scenic, but safe and relatively convenient. Days Inn is bad - avoid that one.

What do you consider 'inexpensive'?

A few weeks ago I got the Hyatt in the Historic area for <font color="blue"><i>$71</i></font> on Priceline. ((*))

Priceline's a good option.

Alternatively, are the Best Western and Quality Inn still open on Bay Street? Stayed in each a few years ago. Both were very basic, but cheaper than alternatives. The Days Inn on Bay may also be an affordable option.

Someone posted recently asking about an old motor lodge on the edge of the Historic Distict - the Thunderbird Inn. They found a great rate. Evidently, the place has been renovated and provides free parking.

Priceline is a great option to get a great hotel at a great price.

Rooms at the Hyatt have been going on Priceline for $70-90 recently, though not for dates with events going on.

We just returned from Savannah and got an &quot;extended stay&quot; rate (for five nights) of $129.99 (and this was during the annual Tour of Homes and Gardens) for a room with two doubles and a full kitchen (even dishwasher and icemaker!) and breakfast included. It's on the corner of East Bay and Lincoln, an easy walk to Market Square, the river, etc. Highly recommend.

Midtown my be your best option - in th eheart of savannah but several miles from Riverfront. Holiday Inn - midtown is in the 80 dolalr range with pool etc. If youhave a car it is very conveninet and if you are planning to go to Tybee etc you will find the lcoation is fine. If you want to be within walking distance of riverfront - you will pay more for decent lodging - East Bay is great, Hyatt is right in the middle although not what a lot of people are looking for in a historic distric. Make sure yuo do dinner at the Pink House - downstairs - I am going down next week and can't wait

Marriot on east end of river st is almost new and AWAY from crowds and only 2 block walk to activity BUT BEST BET IS TO TAKE YOUR BIKES because Savannah is spread out and there is lots to see.

I found the Hampton Inn -- just up from the RiverWalk -- quite reasonable a couple of years ago.

Forget the bikes. You aren't allowed to ride them on the sidewalks or through the squares. People do, of course, but they also usally get stopped and fined.

There is a free shuttle bus that goes around parts of Savannah (CAT shuttle - Chatham county tranport or something like that to create the acronym). It is designed to help avoid traffic in Historic Distric. Ask your hotel for info or try to find it on line - buses are well marked - they say FREE on them

That Marriott is 14 years at the very least, but older than that as it was there when we moved there. Compared to some of Savannah's buildings, that makes it &quot;newer&quot;, but I wouldn't call it an &quot;almost new&quot; hotel. Prior to becoming a Marriott, it was a Radisson and if I'm not mistaken, it was something else before that.

The Promenade/Best Western at the intersection of MLK and W Bay looks seedy from the outside but we had a really nice room, friendly staff, and the price was in the $90 range. It is also right at the western edge of the Historic District and a representative was on hand in the lobby to set up tours with Old Savannah.
