savannah, Ga
have recently read that there may be some safety issues in Savannah, but cannot find any concrete information about it. Especially the Historic area. Does anyone know anything about this? what area should we stay away from. If so, where might be a good hotel to stay in down there, that is convenient AND safe! Would prefer to stay within the Hilton Family of hotels, but ultimately just a clean safe, enjoyable hotel with 2 teenagers- family of 4. thanks

The Hampton Inn on Bay is often recommended here (excellent location and has much more charm than a typical Hampton Inn)and is part of the Hilton Family.

I've been to Savannah several times and never worried about my safety. I think that as long as you stay in the historic area you should be fine. We stayed at the River Street Inn on our last visit and were quite pleased with the location, room and service.

Just consider Savannah to be a big city. If you stick to the tourist areas, and use common sense, you'll be fine.

anyone stayed at the Double tree hotel on 411 W Bay st in savannah, we have a reservation there, but not sure. it is on the west side, close to martin luther king.
is the west side less safe than the east side? How bout the hampton inn on 201 martin luther king blvd.? thanks for input |
The rule is very simple: Whereever you see beautiful historic buildings, it is safe - including Forsyth Park (where we walked at night several times without feeling unsafe).
And whereever you see shabby buildings, it is unsafe. As a general rule, I would avoid the areas west of Jefferson St. I must add, we did not feel safe in the complimentary CAT shuttle bus between stops no. 30 and no. 6. In fact, our son's watch (thank God, a cheap one) was stolen during this bus ride. |
The Doubletree on West Bay is nicely located and receives good reviews on TA. Staying on Martin Luther King Boulevard would be much less convenient (and charming).

We loved our stay in Savannah and never felt unsafe anyplace we went. We stayed at the Ballastone which would be an excellent choice for you and your husband, but not with your teenagers. I think the Hampton Inn was a good suggestion.
So much to see and do. I have a file on Savannah that I made up when planning our trip. If you'd like a copy e-mail me at [email protected]. |
