Savannah GA
Hi
First time visiting Savannah, GA and Charelston, SC Where is better to stay -downtown or any other specific areas have 2-3 days in each town what is a must to see going first week of April Thanks in advance for your help |
Hi elko
I'd recommend staying in the historic areas of both, even if one might be paying more for it... downtown peninsula in Charleston (somewhere south of Calhoun), Historic District in Savannah (north of Forsyth Park)-- as it really allows you to soak up the ambience in both cities; from these, you can walk everywhere and that's fun. Must-see? That's in the eye of the beholder, but I would strongly encourage a visitor to see Fort Sumter on a nice day in Charleston, to visit some historic homes (Owens-Thomas House, Aiken-Rhett House, Nathaniel Russell House I quite liked) and eat some Low Country cuisine in both. Allot time in both to leisurely explore the side streets so as to soak in the historic ambience. Best wishes, Daniel |
Hi.....We just got back from Savannah and did something a little off the beaten path but still considered a tourist attraction. Its called Bonaventure Cematary. Its just outside of Savannah so you'll have to drive to it. Make sure to get good direstions or use a GPS as some of the old streets are not marked. Its a historic cematary with a section that is just beautiful with large sculpted monuments and plenty of history. Theres a visitors building where you stop to get a map then you can drive back to it then walk (or drive) around. Lots of moss hanging and things should be starting to bloom. Look at website. They even filmed a movie there and its free!

Outside to the historic center in Savannah can be a little iffy. Everything is within walking distance in the center. Great restaurants. Mrs. Wilkes is wonderful for real southern cooking. The cemetery mentioned above is absolutely beautiful and a bit haunting, due to the spanish moss draped trees.
In Charleston, Magnolia's was a wonderful restaurant. We were very disappointed in Poogan's porch- wouldn't recommmend it. We came across a lovely old cemetery in the middle of Charleston- it is on the grounds of the Unitarian church. |
You may want to take a look at my trip report on these two cities in about the same amount of time as you allotted; click on my name to find it.
