Savannah/Charleston ?s

Thanks to feedback from this board, we (2 couples) have decided to go to Charleston and/or Savannah next October. We will be probably flying in on a Thursday and leaving on Tuesday. We like wandering around, a museum or historical site but not too many, nightlife but not too late (getting old) casual dining, etc. I would like to know if it is reasonable to visit both places. If not, which one would you describe as having more to see and do.

You could do both cities in 5 days. I've been to both, but if I had to pick only one, I'd go to Charleston. Loads to do and see. I was just there a month ago and loved it... wish I'd been able to stay another few days. I got The Mills House on Priceline and loved it... great location and fantastic staff!

I would not do both cities in that time frame -- you already have two travel days, and this would add a third for a six day trip. Stay in Charleston for the whole time - there is plenty to do and see. If you want a little diversion, spend a night in Beaufort or at the Woodlands in Summerville.

My recommendation is to do 1 town and Charleston would be my suggestion...not just because I live here. Having been to Savannah several times, I do beleive there is more to do in Charleston. I actually work for a band here and created a "Charleston Links" on the band's site for folks visiting. Here's the link http://www.bluedogs.com/content.asp?...;parentID=2176. I've listed a pretty diverse list of dining and nightlife things as well as sites to see. One of my favorite things to do is visit the rooftop bar at the Market Pavillion Hotel...a great place to have cocktails before dinner - great view and October is nice...not too hot.

Please feel free to email me at [email protected] if you'd like more info on Charleston or if I can assist you in any way.

Charleston has much more to see & do than Savannah. From the tours, shopping, antiques, the straw market, Fort Sumpter, scenery...you name it.

My husband & I stayed there for 7 days & nights and still had more we could have done. We then went to Savannah and it was nice, but seemed less exciting. I sent him out golfing, while I read a book, and slowly did a walking tour (by myself).

Charleston is a place I am eager to visit again!

Thank you all for your posts. We will stick to Charleston per your advice. I don't really want to spend half our time on travel. Here's another question. How far is the airport from downtown? Do you recommend renting a car? Can anyone recommend a decent hotel for around $150 a night? Ok so it's more than one question. Thanks again. You've all been very helpful and obviously enjoy Charleston so much that I am more confident in our decision to go.

A car isn't completely necessary in Charleston if you stay in the historic district, but it does help a lot if you want to get outside the city. A car will enable you to visit a few plantations, the beaches, and a few other less central places. With that many days in Charleston, I would want a car for at least a couple of days.
