Savannah casual dining

We are spending a long weekend in Savannah in April, and have most of our time planned. However, we will be arriving after a long day of travel, and as we are staying on Washington Square, I am looking for someplace close and casual for dinner that first night. We would ideally like to walk from our house.
Suggestions?

I would normally never ever recommend Pirates House as I think their food is very very mediocre, but in your case, not wanting to do much and wanting it close and casual, that might be a good fit for you. It's not terrible food, just keep your expectations in check. It does have the redeeming quality of being an interesting building. Alternatively, a few blocks over and better food, you might try Il Pasticcio.

We really like B. Matthews

Great place for a drink, too.

It would be worth the walk to the cocktail lounge downstairs from the Old Pink House where you can order just appetizers, if you like, and Gail on the piano is fantastic.

Or, head for the lounge behind the dining room at the 17 Hundred 90. Comfortable seating. Generous happy hour offerings.

We liked Tubby's on River Street so much we went twice while we were in Savannah - it's very casual, not too expensive and I think fairly close to where you'll be staying. A nice walk, at any rate.

You are within 2-3 blocks of Bay Street which is the next block up from the Savannah River and River Street. You will be at the very end of River Street - and that end has fewer restaurants than the other. There are several restaurants along River Street - I would be cautious about walking that route after dark - I would still do it, but with a little added alertness and not late at night.

Vic's on the River (26 East Bay) is also casual, but with very good upscale food. About a 5-10 minute walk from Washington Square.

We stayed at Staybridge on Bay at Lincoln (just west of Washington Square) and walked around at night. We read/heard not to wander east of Broad Street. The end of River Street, where it intersects with East Bay, is east of Broad St, and the Marriott is located right there. Washington Square is west of Broad St.

We felt perfectly safe along the riverfront, along East Bay, and through the squares.
