Savannah-budget hotels
 

I am going to Savannah at the end of April with 2 other women. Several years ago I was there and stayed in the historic district and would like to do so again, but neither of my friends are willing to pay the price of lodging in the historic area. Both say that we won't be in the room much and only need a clean, safe place to stay that isn't too far from Savannah or Tybee. We plan to spend time in both places during our 3 days there.

I have checked into budget hotels and find several in Port Wentworth, Richmond Hill, on Abercorn and on Gateway Boulevard. Which location is most convenient to Savannah and Tybee?

When we drive into Savannah will it be a problem to find parking? None of us mind walking so any reasonably priced location will be okay.

You want to get a room in the Midtown Section....(Abercorn Street) This would be the most convenient to the Historic District and Tybee. Port Wentworth, Richmond Hill and Gateway are just tooooo far.

Drive into the historic district on Abercorn. It's a straight shoot. It's also easy to get to Tybee from Abercorn.

You can park at the Visitor's Center and catch a Trolley Tour. Or in one of the parking garages. I believe (not sure) that parking on the street by the meters is free on Saturdays and Sundays.

A second vote for staying in "Midtown" area - look for something near Oglethorpe Mall as that is a safe and convenient area. We have stayed in several - just avoid Days Inn in that area as it is a dive. There are several chain suite-type hotels that would likely fit your needs. Our son is in school in Savannah and when we are making a short trip we sometimes stay in this area to save money. It is about a 10-15 minute drive to Historic Distric.

Street parking in April might be tough to find - but there is a city garage on Bay Street (across from Hampton Inn) that has reasonable rates.

Another thought - "Midtown", just so you know - is not the middle of any town. It is a 2 lane in each direction road with as many strip malls, chain big box stores, chain restaurants as you will see anywhere.

It's been a few years since we went (02) but we stayed at the Best Western History District, 412 W. Bay St., they had plenty of free parking and we were in walking distance to the main tourist area.

I think we paid about $78 (taxes inc) and that included breakfast and we had a nice, big, renovated room with 2 dbl beds.

We had a great long weekend in Savannah . . . lots to see/do/eat/buy!

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I guess I will book a room at one of the hotels on Abercorn. I checked both the Best Western and Quality Inn in the historic district. Both are over $150 a night, which is unacceptable to my companions.

I appreciate the parking suggestions. I know from experience that parking can often be difficult and is usually expensive.

Sandy, I appreciate your offer of your travel log. I sent you an e-mail. Any help will be greatly appreciated. We haven't made definite plans. Decided to go to Tybee and Savannah and do whatever we choose.

Midtown (Abercorn) is probably the next best bet. Most of the hotels there have outside entrances to the rooms. If that is a concern, be sure to ask before you book. The Courtyard by Marriott has interior (hall) entrances.

Someone just asked about the Thunderbird Inn, a renovated motor lodge at the edge of the historic district. I checked their website and tripadvisor reviews and seems like a good low cost option.

Stay clear of the Best Western, Midtown. It's at the end of the runway to the army air base. It can be nerve wracking if they happen to be doing a lot of flying. The Holiday Inn, Midtown has a rather rowdy nightclub. If your luck is bad, you would get rooms near it.

All the rest of them in that area seem to be adequate.
