Savannah: BB or Marriott?

I can do the Marriott downtown or a bed and breakfast. Which would you do and why?

I need some input so I can book book book tomorrow.

The Marriott is on the river, newly renovated and set apart from the maddening crowds found on the more congested parts of River Street. I don't know anything about your bed and breakfast.

there are scads of B&Bs that go all the way from horrid to fantastic.

The Marriott would be better than some, less desirable than others. It's your choice.

Now from a personal standpoint, I don't think I would care for the B&B type of stay. I don't want a cheery host the first thing in the morning, nor do I especially like paying for wine or tea parties in the afternoons when I would have no wish to attend.

The Marriott has great River views. Ask for a riverfront room. It is not as centrally located as some of the other hotels, but that can be a plus. A lot will depend on why you are coming to Savannah.

Definitely a B&B in Savannah. If you stay in the Marriott--or any chain hotel--you could be anywhere in the country. A B&B reflects the culture of where you are. And you don't have to participate in afternoon wine, or milk and cookies in the living room.

Unless you are doing the Marriott for free (on points) I'd stay elsewhere. I just don't care for that property and location. But, someone just said it's been renovated. Haven't been there since a renovation - but it sorely needed one.

We just returned from Savannah a few weeks ago and a fabulous stay at the Ballastone Inn. It is in the heart of the Historic District (14 E. Oglethorpe Ave.--phone: 800-822-4553). It's pricey but worth every penny we thought. Take a look:

Where do you park if the lot if full at Ballastone?

Giovanna Oct 24th, 2006 10:16 PM

There's metered parking and a loading zone in front of the hotel. We had to park in front a couple of times (once in the loading zone) and we got some sort of special parking permit from the hotel that allowed us to stay there for long periods.

Giovanna which room were you in?

Peach Leather. It was very light with windows across one wall, covered with plantation shutters. Furnished nicely and very comfortable.

Our friends were in the room directly below ours, Tea Olive.
