Savannah & Charleston -- How many days each?

Booking a trip to Charleston and Savannah this spring and wondering how I should split up the week: 3 days Charleston/ 4 days Savannah? Vice versa? Where would you spend more time?

I think you will get conflicting responses to your question. I liked Charleston much better than Savannah, so I would spend more time there. Others like Savannah better. If you are still researching your trip, you might also check out Beaufort, SC, which we really enjoyed.

I really enjoyed both, but I'd have to go with the 4 days for Charleston. The plantations outside Charleston are so incredible when the azaleas are in bloom, then there's the aquarium, Fort Sumter, the Yorktown, the Confederate submarine (I can't remember the museum name). I divided a week's holiday between Georgia & S. Carolina, and didn't see half of what Charleston had to offer. Savannah is lovely, but I really thought Charleston had more to offer for a variety of travellers.

If we were to explore Beaufort, would you recommend that we spend the night, or, just use the better part of the day en route to Savannah? I'm leaning towards adding the extra day in Charleston.

I LOVE both cities, but would give the extra day to Charleston. I think there's more to do in the area, overall.

Just in case you need one more vote to help you decide--I also think that there's more to do in Charleston. In fact, there was an article just this month in Budget Travel magazine about 25 things not to miss in Charleston. One of my favorites is the Charleston Walks. They have a variety of walks to choose from and the guides are very knowledgable. (The guide on our last Charleston Walks tour was a grad student in history.)

Well, you've made it very easy! I'll call the Charleston hotel and add another day. Thanks so much for your help.

Great question J,

These towns are some places I've always wanted to vist, but haven't made it yet. I would want to go in the spring too and would spend about a week.

PLEASE - do a trip report when you return! I'd be greatful!

It will be my pleasure. :-)

I personally think the shopping and dining in Charleston is better than Savannah.

As far as architecture, history (Charleston is almost 100 years older than Savannah), attractions, and culture, they are pretty even. Charleston with Spoleto would edge out Savannah culture wise on an international level.

I would love to hear your itinerary. We have been in both Charleston and Savannah, and loved both, but don't think I would have given that many days to either (they're both small cities, after all).

If you are going in the spring time, see if you can coincide your trip with the Savannah home and garden tour. I'm sure Charleston has something similar so perhaps you can hit a week/weekend which has this. This year, it was in late March in Savannah.
