Savannah and Beyond
Hi,
My husband and I are planning a four day trip to Savannah in early November. We have reservation at the Hamilton Turner Inn and have two additional nights to spend in the area before our departure back to NYC. We have already visited (and loved) Charleston and Beaufort and are considering visiting Jekyll Island for two nights. What do you think? We are fairly active, love to explore, will have a car, and need advice. Is Jekyll worthwhile for two nights or should we re-visit Charleston and Beaufort? Thank you. |
Go to Jekyll Island - one of the most beautifult spots in the US. Unlike nearby coastal towns it's not overdeveloped. Great restaurants, architecture, isolated beaches (in Nov.), horseback, bicycling. I could go on. Truly a "don't miss".

We stayed at the Jekyll Club Hotel last weekend for a wedding and I have to say I was a little disappointed. While Jekyll Island is not overdeveloped and there are fewer people than Charleston and Beaufort it is very little to do there, other than beach, biking and bocca. I will also say Amelia Island is much prettier than Jekyll Island. There are few good resturants, the hotel is old and we were quite bored after a few days. We usually visit Amelia Island/Fernandina, a two hour drive south of Savannah. There are two deluxe hotels and several beautiful B&B's. I will highly recommend going there for two nights instead if Jekyll.

Jekyll does have pretty beaches and it is not densely developed by any means. It does not have great restaurants or architecture (though there are a few cottages long, long ago owned by members of America's 400). It's a stretch to say either is good. In November Jekyll will be dead.
You might visit the Cloister at Sea Island instead, though the two islands, near as the crow flies, are worlds apart in price and amenities. The Cloister has great restaurants, residential architecture and traditions. |
If you can make your own fun and truly like to explore the wild then you will enjoy Jekyll Island...
If you like people watching more then watching dolphins feed only a few feet from the beach, more then collecting shells and crabbing with nothing more then a net from a pier... taking a boat ride, eating the large peel and eat shrimp right from the boat and drinking the best peach daquiri's ever on the Wharf in the historic distric...eating awesome seafood and hushpuppies at Blackbeards...and taking a quick side trip (9 miles) to St. Simons Island to quick people watch, shop or eat at Barbara Jeans... Then dont come to Jekyll Island... |
