I second the Crab Shack and Breakfast Club on Tybee.

We did the Ghost Tour and it was fun.

REpeat: Lunch at Mrs. Wilkes. You line up at the door to wait your turn to sit at a big table with total strangers and pass bowls of about a dozen vegetables, incredible fried chicken, lots of other things, and when you're done you have to take your plate to the kitchen. It should be just awful, but in fact it's wonderful.

Repeat: :-) Can't do lunch at Mrs. Wilkes because I arrive in the afternoon on a Friday and leave in the morning of the following Monday. They are closed on the weekend. My loss. :-)

They had a similar place in Pensacola, Florida, in the 80's. Don't know if it still exists. It was a great experience. ((b))

If you go out to Tybee, you might want to try Johnny Harris. My boss swears by their chicken.

Well...go anyway! I am gonna be all right! Yesterday I gave some advice about the Hyatt on Oahu....and guess what? I don't even know where the Hyatt is. I thought I was telling the truth. Whew...this season is going to have to be over soon!

Is Johnny Harris the place where they have the "private" booths with the old push buttons from prohibition days? Neat place and really good food as I recall.

We just booked our trip for Savannah over MLK weekend, and we used Priceline's Name-Your-Price feature to book our hotel. I bid on 3-star hotels and got the Hyatt for $85 + tax a night.

Neo, I wish we had heard of Johnny Harris when we were there!

The Hyatt is very nice...try room 206 (great view). Even better is the River Street Inn...a real Savannah experience...the second story rooms with balconies are really fun. From either walk over to the Pink House and have a drink in the basement bar. Be sure to go out to the old cemetary!

Kelly1212, thanks for putting the bug in my ear -- I went on priceline this morning and did get the Hyatt. Didn't get as good a rate as you did. It cost me $95 a night, and with taxes & fees, comes out to $111 a night or $333 for the weekend -- but I'm not weeping. :-) My original reservation was well over $500 + tax. ((b))

You won't really need a car just for a weekend. There are plenty of things to see without one.

However, if the weather is not the best, walking around will not be pleasant, a car will let you see places like Tybee, Fort Pulaski, Bonaventure Cemetery, and Wormsloe. The tour buses will take you a good ways around the main part of the district. They pick up at the Hyatt.
River Street and the City Market area will take up one entire day if you nose around in all the shops. Vinnie's in the City Market is supposed to have excellent pizza.

Savannah has (at least it did at one time) the largest Historic District in the USA. It's over a mile one way and almost a mile across. That's a lot of walking, but it can be done.

Don't miss seeing the Cathedral of St John The Baptist and the Ships of the Sea Musuem (if you are interested in naval history)

The Crab Shack on Tybee is GREAT. We loved it. If you have time, feed the little alligators out front. It's fun. (o:

oh darn!! I am getting my holiday weekends mixed up! I will be at Mardi Gras that wkd. I plan to be at the house mid-February - I guess that is MLK wkd.

I am literally on a trip somewhere every other weekend between now and April. yikes! Then Italy is for two weeks in May.

bummer I am still not going to meet you - there is still hope for Italy if not stateside.

Just returned from a trip to the Georgia coast. We camped at Skidaway Island State Park, just south of Savannah. It was absolutely beautiful with some of the best hiking/biking trails and birdwatching I've ever seen. Also UGA has a marine science center on the Skidaway River that is definately worth the trip. Went to a restaurant in Thunderbolt on the Intracoastal called Tubbys where the locals hang out that had great crab chowder.

Some other ideas-Lunch: Cotton Exchange (great She-Crab) on River St; Vinnie Van Go-Go has the best pizza (City Mkt); 17hundred90 (corner of President & Lincoln) for local bar& great food; Garibaldi's(look upstairs); Sixpence Pub (Liberty/Bull)
Il Pasticcio (Broughton & Bull) for fantastic Italian (eat at the bar);Late night check out BarBar (UNDER City Market).
Oh...if you can find the number/website for Greg Proffit (was Savannah by Foot)...he's got the best Haunted Pub Tour....you'll see it all, laughing all the way.

We just got back last night from the house (well, some of us, I left some friends behind to enjoy today there as well). The weather was PERFECT and I hope you have as much luck. (I meant January above, btw).

I'd avoid Paula Deen's restaurant, the line was over a block long just to get a time slot. We ate at Belford's in City Market which was excellent; their crab cakes won an award recently if you like crab cakes. I don't think you'd need a car unless you planned to leave the city - Beaufort is a nice option for part of one day.

One thing I try to visit both each time I visit now is the coffee shop right at the end of Forsyth Park (not the end with the fountain). It is called the Sentient Bean and their cafe mocha is the best I've had. Real whipped cream on top and so thick the mocha wouldn't slink through it when I tried to drink it! (that is good insurance when you may buy one to put in your cupholder in your car - no spillage!). At any rate, it was excellent. The pastries are made right there too and one of my friends say Starbucks could also take a lesson on their scones. I love that Savannah has so many independent coffee shops.
