Sausalito - need hotel & restaurant recommendations

We are staying one night. I have checked out out The Inn Above Tides and the reviews on Trip Advisor say it is shabby but the views are excellent. I've also checked Casa Madrona but it's kinda pricey - but for one night we might just decide, oh well! The rooms look beautiful.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

nanabee, I do not know but here's an idea -

I was so disappointed when I had to cancel my day in Sausalito. This will be the first thing I reschedule when I return to SF. I wanted to see the houseboat communities and after friending them on FB and reading the TA reviews, I think it's going to be a great experience.

Just in case you are at all interested...

I have never stayed at Inn Above the Tide, but have always wanted to. I just looked at TA and it gives great reviews. Not sure what you read.

bluestar Apr 15th, 2013 07:28 AM

Hotel Sausalito is very close to the ferry terminal. The Gables Inn is pretty close too.

These restaurants have the best views but you'll want to read reviews to determine if you think they're something you like:

Thanks bluestar - the 2013 restaurant guide is great.

Michelle, I was surprised as well. But reading the reviews carefully little notations kept popping up in the reviews like: 3/20 - some of the interiors could use an update,
3.9, sure some rooms could use updating..., 2/25 room itself was old, 2.23 rooms are dated. And many people were not happy with the service.

I will call them and find out if they've done updates recently. It is a premier location and has good reviews otherwise.

starrs, I didn't know about the boat tour, that is definitly something DH would like as well.

MichelleY Apr 15th, 2013 08:03 AM

Nana- are you sure they are the latest? The ones I have read from April/March 2013 say recently renovated, wonderful etc? Top place in Sausalito.

nanabee Apr 15th, 2013 08:08 AM

hmm thanks Michelle. The dates I noted in my post were for 2013. I am glad you have mentioned this I will definately call them to personally ask.

You are so right Michelle. I did call and was very excited that they offer a few rooms in the $350 range but they are booked and could offer a choice of two rooms one was $715 the other $975. Yikes! Now I am really bummed after seeing how special this hotel is. :)

MichelleY Apr 15th, 2013 08:32 AM

Darn. That is why I have never stayed $$$$$$

The Gables Inn has been in Sausalito seemingly forever.

Across the bay in little-known Tiburon, there's also the Water's Edge Hotel:

There's also the lodge in a former military establishment now converted to a park. Supposedly the views are fantastic but I haven't returned to the area for quite awhile, so am not recommending, just suggesting.

Good local restaurant in Sausalito is Saylors...was recommended by a local and we loved it on our last trip...

nanabee Apr 15th, 2013 12:22 PM

Just got back and want to thank everyone (easy, sausalito1, and Shar) for the additional information! This is great, when DH gets home later we can continue to plan. We will be staying 2 days in the city at the Marine Memorial (around $150/night which seems very good pricewise) and the money we are saving we are going to splurge a little for a night or two in Sausalito!

Tomsd Apr 16th, 2013 05:52 PM

Ahhh - the good ole Marines Memorial. One of the first places I went for lunch when I moved to SF in 1970.

And when I lived in Sausalito - used to jog by the houseboats, and had a friend who lived in one. A whole lot of partying went on there - back then anyway. :)

Some of them even had "herb" gardens growing on their roofs. Dems were the days my friend, and we thought they would never end.......................

Tomsd Apr 16th, 2013 05:55 PM

BTW - back in the day - Sally Stanford ran one heck of a "place" and the Alta Mira Hotel - perched on the hill - overlooking Sausalito and the Bay - was a great place to stay - have a drink or two - or go to a wedding, etc.

Tomsd Apr 16th, 2013 05:59 PM

And Sally's fabled Vahalla Inn was located on Bridgeway - 201. Check it out on Wikipedia.

Note to Michelle, I have to thank you for your insistence that Inn Above Tide was in fact how you described it - a first class hotel. There is a hotel with a very similar name (Inn At The Tide) and I didn't realize it was different until I re-checked. I did call Inn Above Tide and was on a waiting list for one of their less expensive rooms ($370/night - double yikes). We got a call that the other reservation cancelled. It's expensive but we are celebrating is two very special occasions (birthday & wedding anniversary).

So I am very excited and thanks again Michelle! I almost passed it up.

Tomsd, I can't wait to do the houseboat tour starrs mentioned.

MichelleY Apr 19th, 2013 07:08 PM

Glad it worked out. Have a great time and report back.

mdwest Apr 19th, 2013 07:40 PM

I hope that you enjoy the Inn Above the Tides as much as we did. To top off our special trip we took the ferry across and had lunch at the Slanted Door. Evidently we were just lucky to get in without reservations. One of the best meals ever. I would highly recommend it and I'm glad that my initial recommendation for Inn Above the Tide (on your other post) was a valid one. I didn't think they could slide downhill that rapidly. Let us know what you think after your adventure.
Have fun.
