Naples is really nice. I like the description "glamorous" because it does feel that way. The main boulevards lined with royal palm trees, the fancy shopping -- it's a great place. It's close to some great natural places - Audobon's nature facility (forget the name right now), Sanibel isn't too far, the Everglades right next door. It's got more energy and excitement than Sarasota, I think, probably because of the growth. Personally I think it would be a great investment, home values will continue to rise. Naples is beautiful, a great choice.

Din,Birder,LN and everyone else,
Thanks so much for the affirmation I was looking for ! My two favorite things about Naples are its beauty and friendly people! Never have I met so many genuine people in so little time...maybe it has to do with the sunny days and nice weather. The bad weather in New York certainly hasn't done much for my disposition!

mypyr, I suggest you draw up a list of the things you just can't live without that you have where you are. Too many people move to Florida and want it to be something else. Be sure that you can accept being without for six months, whether it's without snow, without Northern culture, without your friends, whatever. Make a list of what you do where you are, what you like about where you are, then look into whether you can get it in Naples or Sarasota. In other words, be realistic. You sound like you've made up your mind, but it would be a good idea to know what you're getting into, whether you buy in Naples or Sarasota.
You might check the newspapers in both cities. Then you'll be up on what problems both cities are experiencing, some of which might affect you as a winter resident. All the growth problems in Florida are compounded during the winter when all the visitors come and our population swells to capacity. The tremendous growth in Florida affects everything from parking, taxes, building costs, education, etc. And you will be subsidizing all these things, like it or not.
And as for your question, I prefer Sarasota. It has more to do because it is bigger and has a younger population. I found Naples to be a bit contrived and mundane for my tastes, very mainstream. Sarasota is a more eclectic and diverse city, IMHO.
