Sarasota late night dining?
A bit last minute, but Olive Oyl suggested a send out an SOS. Sal are you out there?
Will be in Sarasota to see four plays this weekend at Asolo. Both Friday and Saturday nights we'd really like to eat after the shows -- that means seating at 10:45, 11:00, or even 11:15. Any hope for us? All I know of is Patrick's downtown. Sometimes they'll serve a light menu late at the Hyatt Boathouse, but anything else these days? I had given up before but we are usually there during the week. Was hoping we might have a little better luck on Friday or Saturday nights. Planning on our Sunday night regular hour dinner at Michael's on East and doing Sunday brunch at The Colony. Any other ideas or exciting lunch spots for Saturday and Monday?

Topping and hoping that Sal got the word from Olive about answering this request.

Hi Patrick, just got word from OO.

My favorites downtown are Mediterraneo (continental) 1970 Main, 365-4122; Alley Cat Cafe (eclectic)1558 Fourth St.
954-1228; Michael's Seafood Grill (at the Quay next to the Hyatt), ) and the Silver Fox (Asian infusion--I'm not sure if I have the name right--it's in a small plaza just down the street from the Hollywood 20 movie complex). Bijou Cafe used to be the hot spot for apris theatre, but I'm hearing mixed reviews. We haven't eaten there for a while, but it was excellent when we did.

I hope this reaches you in time. Enjoy.

Thanks, Sal. Actually I've already called all of those places except Silver Fox. None of them serve past 10:30, although Mediterraneo (which I like) says if they're busy they might seat us up till 11:00. Since both shows aren't out till almost 11:00 it looks like a lost cause. By the way, we had dinner last year again at Bijou and it was still very good.
Called Noah -- on a website it says they serve till midnight. I called them and they said they serve till 9:30! Go figure.

Patrick,

Unfortunately Sarasota rolls up its sidewalks early. I don't know why the restaunteurs have not figured out that there is a market for late-night diners.

I'm surprised at Michael's since the Quay is a popular night spot. Did you also try Michael's on East? You might try a couple of the other restaurants over there--Nick's (Italian) and Da Ru Ma (Japanese), although they probably keep the same hours.

St. Armand's may serve later. You may have already checked the old faithfuls out there (Columbia, Cafe L'Europe, Charlie's Crab etc.). The Patio at the Columbia may have a limited menu at that time.

I just thought about Cafe of the Arts. I think it sold recently, but since they are so close to the Asolo, they used to stay open late. That might be worth a try. You might also want to check the Ritz.

Good luck. Let us know if you find anything. I'll also email you directly in case you don't check back in.
Patrick: what plays are you seeing?
|
Thanks again, Sal. Yep. We are having dinner at Michaels' on East on Sunday night (no show, so time worked out), but close early, as does the Michaels at the Quay, Da Ru Ma, and Jordan's. I think we are resolved to Patrick's one night, and check the Boathouse at the Hyatt in case they are doing their late night menu one night. Munroe's used to do a late night light supper upstairs, but they stopped that too. I figure a half hour after the show to get to St. Armand's so giving up on that for after the show as well. Thanks for the tips. By the way, you reminded me of Alley Cat which I had checked earlier (yea, close early) and booked for lunch tomorrow. Always good and fun, I think.
And we are doing brunch on Sunday at The Colony.
We have our European travel friends with us and they have not really been too much in Sarasota so we're trying to really show them a great time. By the way we got two one bedroom apts at Residence Inn for $74 a night each. Not bad for January in season. Originally they were $159, but when I checked back this week, got a much better deal. When I called the Wellesly they were quoting $119. The Hyatt has been fully booked for this weekend since November.
Audrey: we are seeing Fuddy Meers by the Conservatory group in the studio at Asolo tonight. Tomorrow we see Born Yesterday and A Flea in Her Ear in the main stage. And Sunday a matinee of Da also on the main stage. Looking forward to all of them.
