Sarasota hotels - Lido Key

Considering booking a holiday to Sarasota with my boyfriend (we are from the UK). We are considering the Helmsley Sandcastle Hotel or the Half Moon Beach on Lido Key.
Does anyone have any recommendations for the best out of the two? Or any information on either?
Any info much appreciated

Emma

Half moon Beach Club seemed pretty nice @ 6 yrs ago. Haven't been since. The place to stay now seems to be the Radison-not far from public beach so my not be as quiet as the others, but is newer & has te only beach bar left on the island (I think)
Check with Sarasota camber of commerce for other hotels in the area.
Lots of Europeans & Canadians vacationong in the area
The weather has been great lately
Have fub
Hi Emma,
Not been to the H Sandcastle before, but been lots of times to the Half Moon. ( We're from UK and Ireland). Half Moon is further down the key, which means it's a long walk to St Armands, but we really like the location. It's low rise just 2 stories, the pool area is v nice (breakfast is served there) and the beach is lovely. The rooms are fine, a little 'tired' decorwise in spots but comfortable and clean. All round it's a nice hotel, relaxed atmosphere, pleasant grounds. If you are booking, check out their 'internet specials' on their website. I'd go for either, what they call a 'Hotel Room' (specify the gardenside) or a 'Poolside' room (more expensive). There are some nice walks nearby in 'Lido Park'. If you are thinking of going to Naples, try the Escalante it's gorgeous (looks pricey but try booking through quikbook.com for special deals). Have a great time!!

We go to Florida often and have stayed at the Half Moon. It was not a favoritie and we have not returned. I thought the pool area too small. Views of the ocean from the hotel are limited. Beach had a serious erosion problem when we were there last year.

Also too far from anywhere. We were quite impressed with the beach area around the Hilton, just past The Colony and will try that next time we are in that area.
