Thank you so much for all this useful information on the different areas and traffic information. We'll definitely look at Manhattan Beach.
Didn't realise it would be so difficult to find a flat our house. Looks like California is going the way of Paris, regarding short term rentals.

Since you don't seem fussed about being convenient to visiting Hollywood/Bev Hills etc, this one in Hermosa Beach looks fine. (Hermosa is just south of Manhattan Beach and you'd have to assume that rentals there will remain legal...in MB they are not going to be).

The Pacifica group of hotels have nice properties in the LA area. We have stayed several times at the Inn at Venice Beach (just a block or two from the pier), as well as Jamaica Bay Inn (with views of Marina del Rey), and can recommend both of them.
There's also this property at Manhattan Beach, which has suites and connecting rooms: http://www.pacificahotels.com/thebelamar/specials

The property at clark's link faces an apartment building (#60 in the 2nd to the last photo) that is going to be demolished/replaced. The building may already be gone as I heard about this a couple of weeks ago. By June of next year there could be a lot of construction going on. Otherwise, it's a great location.
The Belamar is near my house. Some rooms are very close to Sepulveda, so if you want quiet you need to ask for it. AFAIK, there are no rooms with kitchenettes. It's a nice, easy, flat walk from the hotel to the beach along a greenbelt path separated from the street, but it's about 1.5-2 miles each way. (There is free street parking until you get close to the beach, but it fills up early on a summer day. Do check the signs for restrictions.) There are three shopping centers, a movie complex and lots of restaurants within about 3 blocks of the hotel.

What I don't like about clark's listing is that you cannot use the garage for secure parking, you have to park in the driveway, otherwise it looks fine. For Hermosa Beach you have to have a parking space included, street parking is limited and the meter maids ticket like crazy, lived there, then Redondo Beach, then Manhattan Beach. All the South Bay beach towns are nice to live in and family friendly.

This summer, Los Angeles Councilmembers Mike Bonin and Herb Wesson proposed their motion to both regulate short-term rental sites and tax the stays that are allowed. It's not clear when that motion will be taken up by the full council. It is still pending in the city's planning committee.
I suspect it will pass through planning by the end of the year, since neighborhood councils are starting to weigh in on the issue.
In short, since the trip isn't until next June, I wouldn't be looking at these places to book . . . just in case.
If it were me, I'd book a couple of rooms, or a suite at the Beach House. Hermosa is great for kids/teens, and the Beach House is right by the pier. Lots to do and places to eat. Some clubs allow teens, but our favorite Hermosa venue is Saint Rocke that has a 21 and over rule (great food though!).

That's what I'm looking at at the moment; book hotel with cancellation option.
Thanks Surfergirl: Beach House looks great! I was also looking at the Shore Hotel in Santa Monica.
I'm thinking that most of the places we want to visit are in the north, is Santa Monica easier?

Your activity list should help answer your questions. It depends where you're planning to go in LA. In general the answer to your second to last question is yes, which is why I suggested Malibu or Pacific Palisades. To most LA attractions it's much further from Hermosa or Redondo than Santa Monica or even Malibu.

On the list are: Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, shopping, Universal Studios, cycling along the beach, the Getty Center, Paramount Studio, maybe a daytrip to Catalina Island. We have 8 nights in the LA area.

If you want to do some sightseeing in Beverly Hills, Hollywood and LA in general and decide to split your visit, there is a great all suite hotel where we have stayed many times over the years, most recently just this past August. Unlike corporate types of suite hotels, this place is lovely with each unit feeling like a real apartment decorated ala West Hollywood and not mass produced, and since it is smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood it has a really great homelike feel to it! The rooftop pool is great and has amazing views!!

Socialworker; those suites look great, thanks for the tip!
And thank you all for your insights; these days it's unusual for us to get the whole family on a holiday together. As we've never been to LA, your advice is really helpful.
