New Orleans in summer

Is the weather too oppressive in July and August for a nice vacation?

I think so. I don't mind hot weather, but the humidity is a killer.

As much as I love New Orleans, I really find it dreary in the summer. I've had to be there several times in August in recent years, and have found it too hot and humid to enjoy. Oppressive is the perfect word for it.

YES! Houston's weather is about the same and it really makes it difficult to do anything outdoors. Not as many people travel there in the summer, so it's pretty quiet in the French Quarter (which is why they offer all the great hotel deals)!

I think so. If you're travelling in the Southeast in the summer I'd say try someplace by the water. Alabama gulf shore?

schach - where are you from? If you are used to the heat/humidity it might not effect you (or is that affect? - I never can remember) as much as it did me. I'm from the mountain west and I thought the heat/humidity would kill me. (thank goodness for cold beer and those otherwise nasty hurricanes.) In August you sometimes get into the rainy season - and that ain't no fun either.
