Santa Fe/Taos -- SOON!
We are attending a conference in Santa Fe at the end of October. We are booked into the conference hotel/The Inn at the Loretto so that is *fixed*. We will have a car and plan to spend one day driving to Taos, seeing a few things on the way and having lunch. I've scoured the websites, but would appreciate folks telling us the one or two "don't miss" things re: Taos and a restaurant recommendation. We are planning to have some free time in Santa Fe [shhhh...don't tell our employers ] and would appreciate one or two restaurant recommendations, both moderate and expensive, as well as the two or three "essential" things to see or experience. Thanks!

Bandelier Canyon is a must see for Taos. It is a canyon that has ancient Native American ruins. You can take several different hikes around it, each with a differing degree of difficulty. If you want some history of Taos, stop by the Mabel Dodge Lujan house and the Millicent Rogers house. There are several destinations around Taos that are interesting. One of them is the town of Chemayo which was/is a spiritual and historical site. There's an excellent Mexican restaurant there; I can't remember the name but it's the most well known one in Chemayo. Have a great trip.

Native American ruins northwest of Santa Fe, NM. Combination of stone dwellings and caves in soft stone. Small park subject to close due to overcrowding on weekends. Nice quiet walk through Main Ruins Loop. Moderately strenuous climb to 'Ceremonial Cave' 140 ft up series of ladders & steps. Falls Trail below Visitor's Center to view falls and on to Rio Grande. Frey Trail to/from campground. longer back country hiking available. Check at Visitor's Center for Native American music by R. Carlos Nakai.
(NM) Rio Grande Gorge Bridge: Located on highway 64, northwest of Taos. Drop of over 600 ft to Rio Grande River at bottom of gorge. Drive along highway 64 from Taos to Chama very scenic. Also, white water rafting around Taos.
