Thanks for your report! Taking notes as I leave for Santa Fe after Christmas. Sounds like The Compound was great but you would have preferred a slightly more casual experience?

Hi, Leely2. Good question! I think the problem was that the rather large dining room was mostly empty (I think it was a Tuesday??)--not too formal, just not as cozy and convivial as the bar that night. On the other hand, our dinner was long and leisurely; we would not have stayed on barstools that long!

Enjoy your trip, and report back when you return!

This all sounds so wonderful, but the breakfasts all sound amazing. We have booked (in May) at La Fonda, and were planning on a breakfast included plan (something like $12 extra per person per day) which seems a steal -- and breakfasts are supposed to be great there, but suddenly I'm thinking we should opt out of that and get around to other great breakfast spots.

Question -- are there many actual paintings at the Georgia O'Keefe home -- or is it really just a "house" tour, rather than an art tour?

NewbE Dec 24th, 2013 08:23 AM

Hi, Neo. The home is "just" her home, but some of the iconic images she painted over and over are of the home and the views through its windows. The house is very small. What makes the tour valuable is seeing what she saw, plus it's just really gorgeous up there! It's a tiny village. And the guides are great.

FWIW, Cafe Pasqual's serves breakfast into the afternoon, so if you don't mind eating two breakfasts a day... :-) Personally, I try to pack as many meals as possible into every day when I'm out there because the food in all its variety is so great, so I would not want to eat breakfast in the same place every day. But I could see grabbing coffee and a bite at the hotel since it's included and then moving on, like a hobbit, to second breakfast.

Neo, the breakfasts at La Fonda are really good and in a sunny, nice room. However, as mentioned there are many breakfast spots around Santa Fe. However, don't eat too much to spoil your lunch as you won't want to miss lunches in town either. ;-)

Even though there are few paintings at the home tour of Georgia O'Keeffe it is a special place to visit and see the dramatic landscape. I wasn't a fan of hers until I saw the area she lived and painted (at Ghost Ranch just 5 min from her Abiquiu house) and then it all made sense. It's stunning scenery.

Sounds like a great trip--made me want to go back to Santa Fe.

Zozobra is definitely on my list, just never got there at the right time. However, once in August we saw large bins placed around the plaza vicinity, with strips of paper on which people could write down their troubles, which would be stuffed into the puppet before the big burn. That was pretty cool.

In SF now. Had a great (but filling) dinner at Atrisco Cafe. Drinks at the St. Francis bar earlier. Drinks at the Anasazi yesterday. Wonderful and cold here! Loved Tent Rocks and out to Bandelier tomorrow. Really fascinated with the landscapes and natural beauty of this area.

Glad you are having good weather for your trip, Leely2. We enjoy having a cocktail at both of those places, too. Secreto Bar (at the St. Francis) has a great cocktail list and love the ambiance of Anasazi Bar.

Have fun and Happy New Year!

great trip review! we are headed up there this labor day weekend actually so I hope some of these restaurants you mentioned are all still open. I love a good breakfast spot!

ElendilPickle Jul 12th, 2014 01:00 PM

I believe all those restaurants are open, PlishBrown.

The only change is Marble Tap Room was forced to move out of the plaza area and relocated down by Ohorri's coffee at Cerrillos & Sandoval.

If these haven't been mentioned for breakfast try
Tia Sophia's
The Pantry
Plaza Cafe
Pasqual's

NewbE Jul 13th, 2014 07:24 PM

That's good to know about Marble, thanks, BeachGirl. We read that they closed, but didn't know they relocated.
