Sanibel/Captiva--Place to eat/Things to do for kids

Please tell me the best place you have taken children to eat in Sanibel and Captiva, and things to do that are really interesting to kids. No need to leave out Fort Myers Beach since this is local enough to travel to. Please help.

Hi Kathy, we went to Sanibel last May/June and the kids loved it. It was a relaxing vacation. The kids loved just hanging out at the pool and the beach. Other than that, we did go to the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum (very classy place!) and to the Ding Darling Wildlife Sanctuary. The wildlife sanctuary is basically a drive-through park, but you can stop your car whenever you feel like it and get out to get a closer look at things. Make sure you stop in at the visitors center before you drive through. One of the employees gave the kids a wildlife BINGO game to play as they went through and when they turned it in they got some small prizes.
To eat, we really liked The Bubble Room on Captiva. We went for lunch so it wasn't quite so crowded as I've heard it is in the evenings. The Hungry Heron has a huge menu and huge portions and is very kid-friendly. No kidding, the leftovers fed us all for lunch the next day. McT's (family seafood restaurant) was great, as was Cheeburger, Cheeburger (old-fashioned hamburger joint).

Have fun, wish we were going back again!

Information from a long time ago when we used to take our kids: You can rent canoes and go into the wildlife preserve, but make sure you've got an adult in each canoe because you'll come back against the tide. Book a boat trip up to Caya Costa, an uninhabited island where you can find hundreds of sand dollars, look for the turtles down at the lighthouse. If they are 10 or so, rent them a bike and set them lose on the miles of bike paths on Sanibel. There used to be a cute restaurant called Tim's Nook--on the beach in Captiva. Hope it's still there.

The Bubble rooms is a must do for the kids and adults. Long waits so plan ahead.

The Blue Herron is suppose to be an excellent restaurant known for large portions.

As for Fort Myers. I was there for 10 days and none of the restaurants stand out in my memory.

The Bubble Room/Captiva is a fun place to eat...lots to look at;HUGE,delicious desserts. The Mucky Duck/Captiva by the beach is also fun. On Sanibel, stop at the local grocery store's deli for items for a beach picnic! The restaurants there are all pretty good. As far as things to do...South Seas Plantation offers dolphin watching boat tours, as well as others. Also fun is the kayaking rentals. Many places also rent bicycles, small sailboats, etc. In Fort Meyers, you can see a Spring Training baseball game, or go to the Henry Ford/Thomas Edison summer home museums. Swimming, shelling, building sandcastles, etc. Sometimes there are local classes on things to make with seashells, etc. Check with the local chamber.
