SanFrancisco airport advice
We'll be docking from a cruise in late August. Can someone give me an idea of whereabouts we'll be as we debark the ship? And how to get from there to the airport (either SF or Oakland)? BART may not be a good solution for us, as we'll have two large bags and stairs can be an issue for spouse. But would still like to know best way to plan and likely cost for various options. Thanks very much!

Take a taxi. It is a 15-20 minute drive from the cruise pier/port to either SFO or OAK. Or you can book Super Shuttle.
BART does go to SFO directly, but its a bit of a hassle to get your stuff from the boat to the train. |
How far from Embarcadero the ship will be docked? This is the only BART station in the area.
As for stairs, there are escalators everywhere, and at least 1 elevator on each station, so it will not be an issue. You may have to get a taxi... you better contact the cruise company now and ask them if they offer any transfers. I usually take a shuttle to the airport, but have no idea if you can request a shuttle pick-up at a pier. Do you know the pier number? |
As you may have ascertained the ship will embark on the SF waterfront called the Embarcadero--most likely south of the Ferry Building. There is a BART station at the foot of the Ferry Building--well across the street actually--named Embarcadero, which will get you to SFO. A taxi should take about 25 mins at non rush hour and will cost approx. $35 to SFO.

Hi tuckerdc, in your case with luggage and your spouse having an issue with stairs etc. I would take a taxi to the airport. No sense having the last hours of your trip ruined by being stressed etc. Best wishes.

I'd be very surprised if the cruise line doesn't offer transfers. Most of them do have buses ready to get their passengers to the most common destinations, of which SFO is sure to be one.

Bart station is nowhere near where the boat docks. I don't know the exact pier, but I can see it across town from my rooftop.
I also work right near the Ferry Building and you can't see the cruise ships from there. It'd be quite the walk from the dock to the Embarcadero. I'd check with the cruise company or stick with a Taxi. |
Thanks for the info. So far, we're looking at the Hyatt Regency, up the ways a bit from the dock, which seems to offer a shuttle. And then, the next day, a cab if need be to Oakland (for Southwest).
