sandestin

we are considering going to sandestin resort at the end of july. the resort sounds great but is there anything to do outside the resort in the area. is it worth getting a car. any interesting towns, particularly with art galleries or museums. thanks

Destin is not really an "art" kind of area, but there are still some nice art gallaries. Seaside, which is the most well-known example of new urbanism design, has an arts community with some nice galleries. There are also some other galleries--mostly folk art and "coastal" art--in Grayton, which is near Seaside.

The Sandestin area is a great place for families, keep in mind that July is high season and the beaches are PACKED! Not to mention very long lines at restaurants and traffic on the strip is tight. We visit every October/Nov. when the rates are much more reasonable and the crowds are gone! The Sandestin resort is WONDERFUL!

I want to add that its worth a drive over to Seaside or Watercolor area, its much less crowded with some very quaint shops to explore.

We are also considering staying at the Sandestin resort in Beach condo 1 or 2 OR at Tops'l resort next door at the beach tower from Sept 4-11,2004. Tops'l is only 55 acres vs. the 2400 at Sandestin. We are looking for great beach (not too crowded), tennis, great dining and interestig places to explore plus lots of walking. Can anyone help me evaluate Tops'l vs. Sandestin resort at that time of year?
