Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe :(
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7a89aecdf.jpeg Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe, 9:45 this morning. If you are not here by 10, forget it. Loved to death by both locals and tourists. |
Oh yes, went last year at this time with friends who spend a month in Tahoe every year. It was a ZOO....will never go back. Only saving grace was when we were on our paddle boards out in the lake away from the crowds. Most people hang on the shore.

Wow. Thank you so much for sharing that. I'll be going to Lake Tahoe on Tuesday and will cross that off my list. People on this forum said it was a "must." But I'd call it a "must-avoid!"

Songdoc- I went in the evening to see the play...it looked nothing like the picture :) |
Songdoc - don't skip it. July is always difficult for sure. The beach is not the main reason for visiting it though, it is the coves, and rock formations, and the boardwalk. You were planning on going to the play, which means arriving in the late afternoon when most of those day trippers will have left. Plus, in the late afternoon often the winds come up and the swimmers leave. |
Songdoc. Don’t skip it as you are going later to see a play. This was a heads up for those wanting to spend the day at the beach. Be there early for a beach day. Still so beautiful. I got my spot by the water. I was happy! |
We are on the fence about the play. The overall experience and setting sounds great, but we're not (both) interested in either of the plays. (Actually, DH has zero interest in either one.) So, we'll "play" it by ear;-). We will arrive Monday night (7/15) and there are still plenty of tickets left for both of the plays.
I guess if we have the time we could drive to that area mid- or late-afternoon and avoid the beach -- even without the play. I live on Kauai and am used to stunning, uncrowded beaches. |
I’ve said it before and it bears repeating - go around 3 pm when the people who have been there all day are leaving. You can get a spot in the parking lot, traffic isn’t an issue and it looks nothing like it does in the picture from 9:45 am on. a Saturday morning in July. |
Thanks so much for all the comments & suggestions.

If you aren't going to the performance, so much the better really. That means you'll arrive after the swimmers leave and drive out before getting stuck in the traffic queue of those leaving rage show. Easy peasy. Drive clockwise around the lake, visiting Emerald Bay, vikingsholm, Tahoe City, etc then after lunch at Sunnyside or some other lakeside / dockside place, head to Sand Harbor, then drive south on the Nevada side via Zephyr Cove etc and back to south shore in time for dinner. |
Thanks, Janisj!

FWIW, we left at 3:30 and they were not letting anyone in. Not sure what that is about as the gates were always open late afternoon. |
The new East Shore Trail just opened. Parking is at the old Ponderosa Ranch. DH did a bike ride on the 3 mile trail. Beautiful. |
