San Simeon to Monterey via Rt. 1 how long to drive?
Planning a trip from Monterey to San Simeon or reverse and am confused on how long it actually takes to drive Rt. 1 (the scenic route) without stopping (I can estimate the stop times). Is it possible to use Monterey or Carmel Valley as a base to do that coast line and explore Big Sur? What town is a good base?

San Simeon to Carmel is about 90 miles.
Best is to do north-south as you will be on the ocean side, have an unobstructed view, and need not cross the street every time you want to stop and look at the scenery (this last is very important!). Estimate about 40 mph nonstop driving (the official mph in most places along this route is 55 mph, but you will not be able to go that fast because of the curves).
Carmel, definitely, would be my choice of where to stay.
If you are really outdoorsy, I'd suggest staying in one of the cabins at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
