San Juan Island - February Visit
We live in Olympia, WA and would like to go to San Juan Island in February for a romantic weekend. Any recommendations on nice places to stay and have dinner in Friday Harbor? We are planning to leave our car at the ferry parking and walk from place to place on the island.
We are new to the Northwest and we prefer to stay in non-smoking places where pets are limited to specific guest rooms. Cost is not an issue.
We're not tied to going to Friday Harbor. We like the rustic look of NW lodges.
Thanks.

Hello Sue, have you checked out the typical weather conditions in February? I ask as I have family members that live on the San Juan Island and it seems to me that February is a very cold and rather unpleasant month weather wise. Of course with all our weather conditions changing that may not be the case but since you want to walk on the island you might want to consider what type of weather you will probably encounter. Best regards.

Hi Sue: I live here on San Juan Island and wanted to mention a few things to you. All businesses on the island are smoke free so that shouldn't be an issue. Being that the island is very pet friendly, there are accomodations that allow pets and many that don't. I'm sure you can get a room that is non-pet by stating your wishes. There are lovely bed and breakfasts on the island as well as terrific hotels such as the Friday Harbor House overlooking the harbor. A few restaurants are closed for the season but there are plenty of great places to choose from. The town is one square mile so it's easily walked. I love our climate here so to me February is far from cold. Things are blooming already in February! We've had a lot of 50 degree days this winter. Yes, we had some snow but nothing that stopped people from doing things. I've yet to use an umbrella here since our rains usually aren't real heavy. In fact, we often get rain at night and have overcast skies during the day during that time. We've had many sunny days this winter already. If you want a car to explore the island, M & W Auto rental will even pick you up at the ferry. Their rentals rates are cheaper during low season, too. I hope you enjoy your visit!

I'd consider taking my car over on the ferry. So you have it to get around the island and aren't just restricted to Friday Harbor. Especially in the winter I think you might be really happy to have it with you.

I agree with Suze about bringing the car. You won't have bad ferry lines in February and you WILL want to get out of Friday Harbor to see some sights--the 2 sections of the National Historical Park, for example.
As someone that has brought my dog to the islands many times, I can tell you most hotels do not accept pets, so if you're trying to avoid dog hair left in a room due to an allergy, you shouldn't have any problems.

We were just in the SJI in Oct., you will definitely want your car, it's the only way to get around and the island is fun to explore.
We stayed at a lovely B&B one mile from Friday Harbor, but it's closed for the Winter now. Had some really nice meals at Vinny's, Downriggers and the Duck Soup Inn. This is the web-site I used to research the trip:
