San Franscisco Restaurant rec-

Will be using MUNI to get around from our hotel (Hyatt Regency) later this month. Have an opera performance at 7:30 PM so thinking of eating NLT 6. No sushi; Could eat earlier and THEN use MUNI or a cab to get up Market if the recommendation is nearer the hotel or down Market if the rec is further in the other direction. Questions are fine; something interesting and good-tasting. Thanks. as always.

Have you ever dined at Plaj? Scandinavian cuisine--think salmon and herring and aquavit.

333 Fulton Street, in the Inn at the Opera

k_marie,

thanks for your reply and the answer is we have not. I would probably like that a lot more than my husbear would. Actually, i am thinking now that we might try returning to Nopalito (the one on 9th possibly) or might try Frances. So may places and so little time. I appreciate your taking the time to reply because IMO these questions are never easy ones and as a result I rarely ask...just too many subjective factors.

I love Nopalito! Frances sounds really good, too.

Thinking of the area around the Opera House, have you been to Jardiniere? I went quite some time ago - it was pricey but very good. I recently went to Lers Ros Thai and really enjoyed it. I keep hearing about Rich Table and it gets very good reviews. I also see good reviews for Monsieur Benjamin, Nightbird and Nojo Ramen Tavern.

We attend about 12 performances a year at the War Memorial Opera House and Davies Symphony Hall. However we no longer dine out beforehand since I am not a fan of eating dinner at 5:30 or 6pm, which is how much time one needs for an 8pm performance if you don't want to dine and dash. I would not recommend eating anywhere too far away from the Civic Center because you will need to eat even earlier with a 7:30 performance especially since you will need to be at the Opera House by about 7:15.

KTtravel, thanks for those additional possibilities which I will look into.

SAB, yes, I understand your decision.

Dukey , a tip for the Opera House. Call Patina which services the opera house and see if you can reserve a table in the Box Bar for drinks at intermission. We actually eat there before performances, it is OK but nothing special or interesting, but dessert and drinks are nice at intermission.

We liked our two meals at the Way Fare Tavern. The corn soup was memorable (we went back the second time just for that), as was the fried chicken. Servers present warm popovers, a very nice touch.

Dukey1 Oct 2nd, 2018 05:06 PM

Thank you, Underhill; we could easily walk to it from our hotel

Underhill Oct 3rd, 2018 08:34 AM

That's just what we did. If you're in the mood for Chinese far, the excellent City View restaurant has very good dim sum and is not far from the Wayfare Tavern.

Dukey1 Oct 3rd, 2018 09:21 AM

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind as well and thank you for not saying things such as "there are better restaurants" but refusing to name any. That, to me, is the most irresponsible sort of post aside from the well-known "it's the obvious choice."

Underhill Oct 4th, 2018 01:53 PM

That reminds me: when I asked a similar question during the summer, one of the restaurants most suggested was Per Bacco. We have a reservation for December.

Leely2 Oct 5th, 2018 10:16 AM

You could try Rich Tavern or August 1 Five. Both are good, both near the opera house.

Dukey1 Oct 5th, 2018 12:14 PM

Leely2,

Thanks very much for those recs. Appreciated.

Leely2 Oct 5th, 2018 01:14 PM

I meant Rich Table not Tavern! My mind went on autopilot. Sorry.

Underhill Oct 6th, 2018 08:36 AM

If your Hyatt is the one near the Embarcadero, then One Market would be an excellent choice--practically across the street.

Dukey1 Oct 6th, 2018 10:36 AM

Yes, Underhill it is and thanks again

Underhill Oct 7th, 2018 06:28 AM

You're welcome. Be sure to get a reservation, as it's a popular place.
