San Francisco - where to stay in Union Square

My husband and I will be traveling to California in June and spending two nights in San Francisco WITHOUT our 4 kids who range in age from 1 to 7 - we rarely, if ever, get away and are so excited to have some time alone and explore San Francisco - we are looking for some recommendations on where to stay in Union Square

How much per night? Will you have a car that you need to park? Small or large hotel, modern or old fashioned charm, simple, basic or deluxe?

Also, try typing San Francisco hotels into the search box, there are lots of threads asking the same thing.

Sorry, I just saw you are new here. Welcome.

There is lots of great info here, but you have to give us a bit more info for us to work with to make helpful suggestions.

Also, the search function isn't the best but it will give you some ideas when you are looking for info in case others have asked similar questions.

As far as hotels in SF, in Union Sq, there are lots to pick from and they are different in price and character etc. So, the more you tell us about what you are looking for, the easier it is to get good replies.

Also, if you can't find your post [s] just click on your name in the upper right corner, or in any post you replied to and you will find all your posts.

Again, sorry for the rough first reply.

We woudl be looking to spend between $150 and $200 - we will not necessarily have to have a car - small or large really does not matter - we are just looking for something clean, comfortable and in a good location

I always recommend staying at The Mosser. It is in a great location, just off Market at 4th Street. Conveniently located to BART, Market St Street Car, walking distance to Union Sq, Embarcadero,Financial Center, Ferry Building.

The rooms are small but they are VERY clean. They have all sorts of rooms, some with shared baths. But they do have rooms with private baths and I did a quick look for mid June, mid week and they are under $160 a night for Queen deluxe.

Keep in mind, everyone has their favorites, so be prepared for lots of suggestions.

Last year I stayed at Campton Place (expensive), Orchard Garden and the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero. I liked all and found the Hyatt's location the best and the Orchard Garden the most bang for the buck (it was brand new and I got a great rate). I'm returning in July and will stay either at the Hyatt Embarcadero again or Le Meridiene. What I found in booking this time was that after I made a refundable reservation, a week later I would find a better rate at the same hotel. The point I want to make is that after you book, as long as you can cancel without penalty - and if you have the time - keep checking because rates seem to change frequently and you might luck out with a lower rate. Have a great stay!

My favorite - by far - is the Hotel Monaco. I checked some dates in June and they have rooms within your budget.

I have also enjoyed the Monaco. My go to place lately though, has been the Sir Francis Drake, less than one block from Union square. Rooms are small but clean and stylish. It is a historic looking building with a great lobby. The Harry Denton Starlight room is at the very top and has a great view of the city. The Westin st. francis is right on the square and looks nice but I've never stayed there.

We went last year at this time and got a great deal on the JW Marriott. Its location worked great for us! I priced out (including parking) and got a parking free at the JW and it was not a bad deal. They could not have been nicer. There is some really good info about San Fran on this forum. Do a search and you will find lots of info! There are some great traveler's here!!
