San Francisco! Where do we stay for a reasonable price?
My sister and I are planning a four night stay in San Francisco at the end of July and we are looking for a hotel that is either in the Union Square/Knob Hill area or by the Warf. I love the idea of a boutique style hotel and am looking for something in the $80-$110 a night.
I have checked out some internet sites and found some hotels, but would love to hear a recommendation from someone who has firsthand experience and was happy with their hotel.
Also, if you have some ideas on restaurants, that would help out lots too!
Thanks.

Priceline experiences in San Francisco: July 2005: Renaiassance Stanford Court, 3 nights $225 total.
May 2004: Hilton Union Square, same price for 3 nights.
Good deals, no gamble, but no changes or refunds.

Always loved the Stanford Court and their world class Lemon Souffle B'fast pancakes with fr raspberries and raspberry sauce, but at $195. + the confiscatory Tourist taxes, I think the Hot Chancellor is a better bargain.

If you decide to use Priceline (which is what I would do) be sure to find the "Name Your Own Price" option on the site, rather than making your reservation through the part of the site on which they tell you the price of a specific hotel.

Columbus Motor Inn It's between North Beach and the Wharf. It's basic but clean and within easy walking distance to allot of tourist areas. It's also one block from a cable car line and the no. 30 bus stops right at the front door. I've stayed here 4 or 5 times, maybe more. We always ask for the 3rd floor away from the street noise. It's been mentioned here a number of times by me and others. Do a search here and at tripadvisor.
There's also a sister property...Cow Hollow in the Marina District also on the no. 30 line. My daughter prefers this property but you need to take the bus to most tourist sights.

These are great suggestions, thanks for your help. I'm leaning towards using Priceline.
One last question. Is Union Square East a better area to try for a hotel than the west? It looks like Priceline divides their areas this way.
Thanks again!

Last time I was in SF, I used www.hotels.com and stayed at the Adante Hotel just a couple of blocks off Union Square. I think it was $70 a night, and it includes a muffin/coffee/cereal breakfast. THe room was actually very nice, on the small side but comfortable. The owner is an ex SF Baseball star, not a baseball fan here, so didn't know the name, but he was a really nice guy and I loved staying there, it was very close to shopping and site seeing.
Have a great time in SF.
