San francisco wheelchair hotel/Priceline
 

My daughter and I will be spending 2 days in SF on our way to Hawaii. She is in a wheelchair. Which area of SF would be most level and safe to book our hotel where we would be able to walk to a lot of sights ? If I bid on Priceline could I specify that I need a wheelchair accessible hotel room? Is the BART from SFO to SF a good idea? Any other insights for seeing SF with a wheelchair. Thanks so much.

East of Union Square and Embarcadero are flat. Never used Priceline, sorry.

There are no lot of sights in one area. You can use public transportation, all buses (except cable cars) are equipped with special platforms to get on board.

By law, any museum, restaurant, hotel must be accessable. As for BART... how much luggage will you have? Can you handle all suitcases and help you daughter if needed? It may be doable!

Faina would probably know but billr if you use BART I would make sure that the elevators are working when you get to the SF BART stations (you probably would get off at the Powell St., Station? The website for BART is: http://www.bart.gov/index.asp.

We recently stayed at Hotel Vitale on the Embarcadero - a beautiful, new, modern hotel right across from Ferry Market Plaza (try The Slanted Door for dinner!). Any new construction or renovations will be accessible, and this part of SF is flat. You can go for hours down the Embarcadero, walking/wheeling. Some of the older attractions, such as Alcatraz may not be as easy, but are worth looking into.

BART from San Francisco to SFO should be really easy, if you can handle all of your luggage yourselves (avoid commute hour). Maybe an airporter would be easier, though, since it is door to door.

We stayed at the Marriott in Embarcadero through Priceline--got a great deal--under $100 AND they upgraded us to a suite. I would assume Marriott has wheelchair access.

The hotel in right across from the Modern Art Museum and is a fun area to stay.

If you need a handicap accessible room I would not bid through Priceline. Most hotels I'm familiar with have only a very, very, limited number of those rooms with wider doors and roll-in showers. That isn't something you could be guaranteed through PCLN.

I would be interested in hearing of your trip in HI. My husband is also disabled and doesn't feel he could do HI after having been there pre-disability.
