Thanks Marginal...In looking ahead, the weather according to Yahoo doesn't show rain in the forecast at all. My children don't own jackets other than lightweight ones because we live in Florida. I'm planning on packing them layers to wear under the jackets and we will carry a backpack around town to put them in if it gets warm. I own a leather jacket and a wool jacket from when I lived in NYC. I wasn't sure if I needed to wool jacket but I think I've dtermined that the leather jacket would be better. My husband is being stubborn and insisting that since he is a "New Yorker" and not a "Floridan" like our children he will not need a jacket. I'm going to pack him one because I know better now thanks to you guys!

It's warming up here this week. Today we should hit the high 60's. I believe the warm weather will hold through the weekend. You should bring hats and gloves for the kids especially if you are goiong to be out on the water. Layers is the best advice you've been given. It often is cold in the am before fog burns off and then cools down again when the sun goes down.

Everyone is different. When I go to a nighttime Giants game I pack a blanket, hat and gloves, a sweatshirt and warm jacket. Other people are in shorts and flip-flops. There are LOTS of people here who not only wear shorts when its in the low 60s, they also sunbathe in the park in those temps (not I ) Your husband is WRONG (IMHO, of course) -- he will need a jacket unless you are spending all your time indoors!

But, on a gorgeous day like today, my husband wears a leather jacket, and I wear either a raincoat-weight jacket, or a light wool coat (they don't sell a lot of "real" winter coats here). If it were the weekend, I would wear a zip up sweatshirt, no coat at all.

If your husband does not want to bring a jacket, he can join the thousands of SF visitors who end up buying and wearing cheesy SF sweatshirts. The vendors just love people like him and for us residents it's a sure sign that someone did not listen to the advise to bring a jacket. LOL The first time my sister visited I repeatedly advised her to bring a lightweight leather jacket, but she lived in NYC and of course ignored me. She was freezing at night--because of the damp. She has never forgotten a jacket since.

sf7307--don't you find that most of the people sunbathing when it hits the low 60's tend to be fairly young? I used to do it too when I was in my 20's

jen, from one floridian to the next, i'm glad you're listening to the posters on this board (including the part about ignoring your husband!) The weather IS so crazy in SF. Last summer when we were there (mid June) we had packed all the layers, light fleece jackets, etc. We ended up, the first day, with a sunny day and 80 degrees (unusual I'm told)... but of course, i figured since we're going to SF, there was no reason to bring sunblock! We went HOME to Florida with sunburns! And the 2nd day was overcast and windy and we biked across the GG bridge and froze. so there you have it.

good idea to get gloves and hats for the kids -- you probably don't have any, but a quick trip to target or walmart or something for some little cheap ones might be a good idea.

No snow within easy driving distance.(it's 5 hours to Tahoe).
Please do take your kids to the Academy of Sciences in GG Park.

Wow, Pam, where are you coming from? On a Saturday morning, I can easily make it from the Peninsula to Truckee in less than 4 hours.

A note on sunscreen - even on overcast days, the UV rays can burn your skin, so sun or no sun, if you are going to be outside, wear sunscreen on exposed skin. It is amazing the number of lobster-people you will see at an outdoor event on an overcast day.

Um, I hate to break it to you but NYC usually doesn;t have snow at Christmas. Some years we will have snow beforehand and one year we did get about 10" - but the snow belt is several hours north of NYC - you really need Vermont or similar - or perhaps Buffalo to be sure of snow around Christmas.
